Notes
- One published genealogical compilation on the Wilkes Family History and Genealogy (full publication information unavailable) of South Carolina reports here as Annie Crump. But other records, including official records on her children naming their parents, name her Anna West. Annie Crump was probably his first wife and Annie West his second. See the discussion below about the 1900 census records for this family.
1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw County, Mississippi, 16 June 1900, Rural Okolona, District 16, page 12B, Hse #196, Fam #211
Gregory, [Hale] R Head W M Dec 1860 39 Married 2 yrs [first rptd 12, then changed to 2] [mar abt 1889] MS SC SC Farmer Owns
Gregory, Annie Wife W F May 1868 32 Single [sic] Married [sic] 5 yrs 0 children/0 living MS MS SC
Gregory, Thompson Son W M Dec 1888 11 Single MS MS MS
Gregory, Annie M Dau W F Apr 1893 7 Single MS MS MS
Gregory, Ula Bell Dau W F Aug 1896 3 Single MS MS MS
Note the discrepancy in the marriage reports for Hale and Anna. His number of years married was first reported as 12, then marked out and in a lighter pencil/pen the number 2 was written. Anna's number of years married appears to be 5. But Anna's record also reports that she has had no children.
This would seem to indicate an earlier marriage by Hale. From references, this wife's name is also likely Annie or Anna. This is probably the Annie Crump mentioned above, who is reported by the Wilkes History as Hale's wife.
One son named as William Marvin Gregory on his death certificate reported his parents as S R Gregory and Anna West. But he was born after the 1900 census.

The pattern of two wives seems to clarify the reports of names and births of children, but the Wilkes History reports the death date of Annie Crump as 14 February 1925. This is the date of death reported for Anna West. The birth date also matches Annie West Gregory. But there is still is a conflict in the 1900 report that Annie had had no children. The two wives would also explain the discrepancy in the number of years married for Hale, first reported married 12 years, then changed to 2 (for the current marriage).
