John Herbert Claiborne (1828 - 1905), b in Brunswick Co, Virginia, 16 March 1828; graduated at the University of Virginia, 1849, and Jefferson Medical College, 1850; settled in Petersburg, Virginia, 1851; Member of the Vvirginia Senate, 1857; Surgeon and Major in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War; m Sarah Joseph Alston, and by her (who d 1866), had issue:

Dr John Herbert Claiborne
Birth Mar 10, 1828
Death Feb 25, 1905
He received his A.B in 1848 and his A.M. from Randolph-Macon College in 1853, joined the 12th Virginia Infantry on April 19, 1861 as surgeon with the rank of captain. Claiborne left the 12th Virginia before its first battle when he was placed in charge of all Petersburg military hospitals on February 15, 1862, where he remained for the duration of the war. He evacuated with the army and surrendered on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House. Dr. Claiborne was a prominent physician after the war.
