Memories of a descendant:
Grandpa (Newton R.) came to live with Minnie's family in the early 30's. He went back to Maud's in Nocona some. Ft. Washita is a museum now. It's 18 miles from Durant, OK. There is a cabin on the grounds at Ft. Washita. Mother said, as we visited Ft. Washita, that her dad, Maud and Willie lived in this cabin after she married. Maud married Jack York and he is buried on the grounds there at Ft. Washita.
He was very dependent on Minnie. She seemed fond of him as he did her. We lived on a farm at Mead, OK. Mother cooked on a wood-burning cook stove and washed on a rub board.
His health was fairly good. He sat on the porch by the hour as we lived on the highway. Living with an active family probably wasn't easy. We were active in church, school and community but he didn't go much nor do I remember him helping any with garden or farm chores. After the old age pension started he went into Durant and lived in a home there - a short time, but Minnie still cared for his needs.
As his health deteriorated he came back to our house to live and was bed-fast. Maud came from Nocona at the time to help care for him. He died Sept. 1943 and was buried at Ravia beside Martha Elvira.
Newton Ruben Goggans was born in Georgia around 1857. He and Martha Elvira had five children: Arthur who died at a young age, Mary Ethel Goggans WHITE, Minnie Lee Goggans BALLINGER, Maud Goggans YORK, and Willie.
