  • Pleasant's parents were married in Rutherford County, North Carolina.  They had moved to Alabama before he was born.  The marriage record below gives his mother's name as Usley.  I first encountered her name in the family's 1850 census.

    This was a new and strange name for me. There were, however,  three people on this page with this name or similar.  In one case it is written Ulsey, in Ursuala Jane's and one other, it is Usley.  Since we know her full name was Ursula Jane, this appears to be a nickname for Ursula.  Elsewhere it is Ursula or Jane.  And Pleasant named one of his daughters Ursula Jane.  This variation in the nickname form of the name makes one wonder if it should be Ulsey, rather than Usley, as found on her marriage record and 1850 census record.

    Family sources report that Pleasant's middle name was David.  But we notice that he also had a brother named David, according to the 1850 census.  In the 1900 census, where he is a widower in the home of his son Pleasant, both have the middle initial of W instead of W.
