Notes
- Some sources report that Harriet Jenkins Israel's father was William M or William Mannon Jenkins. Those that report a mother have the name of William's wife as Anna or Annie Scroggin. But most genealogies of William Mannon (or Manon) Jenkins have his wife as Mary (Polly) Cornet. And they show no other wife, and no child named Harriet.
Harriet's father William Jenkins was not William Mannon Jenkins. I have been able to find no further information on Anna Scroggin or other info on birth or parentage of Harriet Jenkins Israel, other than the censuses here.
Terry Jenkins reports that William Jenkins' parents were Abel Jenkins and Elizabeth Tracy.

William married Annie Scroggin about 1839. In the 1850 census, they are reported in Anderson County, Kentucky, with children 10 years old and under. Annie's mother, apparently a widow, is living with them.

Some time after their son WIlliam was born, about 1854, they moved to Missouri. They were enumerated there in 1860 living in Waverly township of Lafayette County. Her mother is no longer with them and must have died before they moved. George Ann, reported as 2 years old in 1850, must have died as well, since no 12-year-old child is reported matching her in 1860.

In the 1870 census it appears that William has a second wife, because she is named Sarah and is the same age in 1870 as Annie was in 1860. So we might assume Annie died before the census. But Annie's date of death on her grave is 16 Jan 1880. So did Annie have another name of Sarah? And there is the age difference. From the age reported in 1860, Annie would been 58 in 1870, not 48.

In 1880, Mary must have also now passed away, because her two younger children are now in William's household, along with his married daughter Harriet and her husband William Thomas Israel.

Note the interesting birth state reports. Harriet's record reports that she was born in Kentucky and so were both her parents. Yet her father's record reports he was born in Tennessee. Other sources report Kentucky also, Harlan County, specifically. Next door is a W L Jenkins, age 25 with his wife and child, who appears to be Harriet's brother.

This Civil War Service record and other records are for William Mannon Jenkins, not the William Jenkins who was married to Annie Scroggin and was the father of Harriet Jenkins Israel. Several genealogies have confused and tried to merge these with quite a resultant mess.
