    -------------------------------
"Mrs. C. D. McSwain also had many connections in the Methodist Church.  Born Lula Grey in Clark County, Arkansas, in 1854, she lost both her parents at a young age. She was raised by her aunt Mrs. A. R. Winfield and her husband Rev. A. R. Winfield, one of the best known and more controversial figures in 19th century Arkansas Methodism.  After attending school in Memphis, Tennessee, she married John R. Trotter of Monticello, Arkansas, with whom she had five children. Three of these children and her first husband died within a few years. She remained in Emmet after the death of her second husband in 1917 until her death on September 15, 1926."

    --------------------------------

I note that the Methodist history here reports that Lula was born in 1854, and lost both parents "at a young age."  The 1900 census reports she was born in November 1852, making her about 2 years old when her parents died in 1854.  Other informatoin indicates her mother died in 1853.  I found that David Holden, a careful researcher of the McSwain family and related lineages (though he does not include his documentation in his tree), also reports she was born on 19 November 1854.

Note that Lula is reported to have borne only 1 child.  Yet her two children are both enumerated in this household.  And Junie (Junnie) is properly reported as Charles McSwain's step-daughter.  Thus what this  report indicates is that there is only one child of this marriage, though usually all children of any marriages are reported in this field of the census.  Living next door is Charles' sister Hannah Josephine and her husband Robert Garland.

In 1910 we find another Garland family member in Charles and Lula's home, Thomas L Garland, married to Lula's daughter Junie.

Again Lula is reported as having only 1 child (Charles D reported here), though her daughter with John Trotter is in the household.  I have considered that Junie might be the daughter of John Trotter by a previous marriage, but Junie's age indicates her birth occurred about 4 years after the marriage of John and Lula.

Lula's second husband, Rev Charles McSwain, died in 1917.  In 1920, the census enumerates her in the home of her daughter Junie and her son-in-law Thomas L Garland.  Lula and Charles' son Charles is also in the home with his new bride, Gladys.  Note that Junie and Thomas' second child appears to be named Lula, but s designated as a Son, but Female!
