Notes
- The Riddle name appears in censuses and other records in the 1800s as Riddle or Riddles. We note that the names in censuses and public records were normally written by clerks or volunteers.
The high level of funcitonal literacy, as we now use the term, and expectations for general literacy in our 21st century society, is not an operative factor as we observe literacy reports in some censuses and see entries and signatures on some records. We are using the more standard and now common for Riddle, which seems to best represent usage by the literate descendant families.
In the 1860 census, Mary Jane Riddle was reported as a 5-year-old child in the household of EA Riddles and his wife Hannah C, in Carroll County, Arkansas, where we may conclude fairly safely Mary Jane was born.
