Notes

  • Info and records on this family are incomplete and inconsistent.  The main value of this family unit is for exploratory purposes for the Christian and related Jones and Connally lineages.  No documentation has been found for her.   Some sources have her name as Oglesby.  The problem seems to be that Drury Christian may have had had three wives, and most genealogies report only one.

A Sons of the American Revolution application has her name as only Elizabeth Oglesby.  Could it be that the name Frances got attached as a way of some trees to account for the wife Frances Chrsitian, not realizing it was a sidffferent person from the Oglesby woman?

James Jones, a Connally descendant and researcher indicates that Drury has two wives named Frances, one of whom was indeed Frances Elizabeth Oglesby.  Several genealogies have some information on her and her parents, but much of it seems uncertain.  The other was Frances (Fanny) Connally, his thir wife who succeeded him at his death in 1825.  She is mentioned several times in his estate documents as Frances Christian.

James' reserch indicates, and some records bear out, that Frances was a sister of Margaret Connally, the wife of Thomas Jones.  But James is clear on how confused this generation's information is is.  I have worked with James to clarify some if possible.

"Thomas Jones's wife, Margaret Connally, had a sister named Frances, born in 1795. Some online trees show her to have been the wife of Drury Christian, but she would have had to be a 13-year-old bride, since Cenas and Pyrene were born in 1808."

In our ongoing correspondence and collaboration on the Connally, Jones and Christians family lines, James provided a summary of the basic situation.

"Drury (or Drewry) Christian, whose birth date ranges between 1750 and 1793 in various trees, but the best support is for the way you have it, namely about 1760. He had three wives that we know of, Mornin (or Mourning) Christian, daughter of Charles Hunt Christian and Mary Leake; Frances Elizabeth Oglesby, whom for the moment we have no choice but to accept as mother of Cenas, Pyrene, and Sally; and Frances Connally. Only for Mornin Christian do we have actual Virginia marriage records, one each for 4 Mar 1784 and 4 Mar 1785. After the last child was born of this marriage, in 1799, there was a jump until 1808, when Cenas and Pyrene were born, followed by Sarah Frances "Sally" in 1811. Unless all the trees that list Frances Elizabeth Oglesby as their mother is wrong (I have found no actual marriage record, [Frances Oglesby is the mother of these three daughters].)"

Similarly, at Drury's death in 1825, his surviving wife and executrix was named as Frances Christian, and a minor child named Mary is mentioned, who is no doubt Frances' daughter.

Others also report Frances Oglesby as the wife of James Ramsey, but lack her first husband, Drury Christian.  The genealogy reporting Frances Connally also reports parents for her but has no documentation.  The parents are Thomas Connally and Mary Polly Price.  (And note that Polly is simply a nickname for Mary.)  This indicates a confusion of Frances Elizabeth Oglesby and Frances (Fanny) Connally, named in Drury's will as his surviving wife and executrix.

Drury's will names his heirs and executors.  No other documentation has been found on these three sons.  It will be assumed that, lacking any other information, these, like the older daughters, are the children of Frances Elizabeth Oglesby.

Georgia, Wills and Probate Records, 1742-1992
    Drury Christian, Will
Probate Franklin County, Georgia, 7 March 1825
    Heirs named:
    Wife Frances Christian
Daughters Pyrene, Cenas, Sarah and minor child Mary
Sons Drury B, Thomas C and John A
Wife Frances Christian appointed Executrix of the estate, and his friends Thomas Jones and George Stovall as Executors

No birth dates have been found for the three sons.  Other records give us information on the four older daughters.  A fourth daughter named Mary was named as a minor child in Drury's will, and appears to be the daughter of Frances Connally, who survived Drury when he died in 1825.
