Notes

  • The name found in many records as Gocio is the French name originally spelled Gossiau, which also shows up in various records.

In the 1860 census, Louis was reported as a widower.  His 7-year-old daughter Alma Anna is in his hosuehold.

In 1870, he and Anna are still together in the household, with two unrelated persons also listed.

1870 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 13 June, Old River Township, P O Swan Lake, page 3 (scan 63), Hse/Fam #34

Louis wrote his will about a year before he died.  On 13 August 1870 he wrote a two-page will covering the following provisions.

    Will of Louis Gocio
    Arkansas County, Arkansas
    13 August 1870
Bequeaths $1.00 each to children of first wife Amilea [Amelia] Gocio:
Severine Cannon, Belina Stythe, William R Gocio, James L Gocio, John Gocio
Bequeaths to minor daughter Alma Anne Gocio all his real estate & some items of furniture
Bequeaths to son John Gocio all items of property not specifically given to Alma Anna
Executors Henry Young & sons William R & James L Gocio
    Witnesses John Whitaker & J L Johnson

The will's reference to Louis' first wife as Amelia may indicate he married two women named Amelia.  Alternatively, it may mean that the Amelia reported as his wife in the 1850 census was that first wife, and not Amelia Brinsback Pinot, as it appears to us.

    Considerations:
The details of Louiis' 1850 census record matches Amelia Brinsback Pinot, and no other record for 1850 or later appears in the name of Amelia Pinot until her burial in St Peter's Cemetery in New Gascony, Old Bogy Township, Jefferson County, Arkansas, the next township west of Old River (Arkansas Post) in Arkansas County.  Dates on the burial of Amelia Gocio in the same cemetery report she died in 1858, while a separate entry under the name Amelia Pinot has no dates.  It could very well be that these are two entries for the same person under each of her married names.  No death records have been found for any of these, other than the dates given for most of them in the St Peters burials.
