Notes

  • Frances usually is found with the middle initial M.  Two genealogiesreport this middle name as Melinda.  They have no documentation orrecords for this, and I have not seen any reference to this middlename.

In most records Frances is reported as Frances M.  But one record andsome genealogies report her full name as Mary Frances.

In the 1900 census Frances is reported as the wife of Edmond WillisBriscoe in Bosque County, Texas, near Waco.  Their last child hereappears to be Dessie, and appears in 1910 as Dessix.  This isclarified in his WWI draft registration where the name is UberterDesiax.  He signs it the same way, including the added R common innames and nouns in rural accents.  So it appears "Dessie" was anickname, short form for Desiax.

Notice that Frances' record says she has had three children, and yetfour are in the home.  I have no other indication that the first wasnot her child.  This is corrected in the 1910 census, when it isreported she has had 4 children.  They moved to the new state ofOklahoma after the birth of their son Dessie (Uberta Desiax) in late1899 or early 1900.  They are enumerated in the 1910 census in TillmanCounty, just over the Red River and little northwest of Wichita Falls,Wichita County, Texas.

It is reported here that Frances has borne 4 children and all of themare living.  The marriage report is different from 1900 also.  Theirfirst child Herman was reported born in March 1885 and they werereported married for 16 years, making it about 1884 when they married. In 1910, however, they are reported married for 23 years, making itabout 1887, the year reported in 1900 as the birth year of theirsecond child Effie.

In 1934, I found Frances and Edmond in the San Francisco, California,City Directory.  The directory does not report an occupation forEdmond.  I don't know why they were in San Francisco.

At some point after the 1933 Mason City Directory, Edmond and Francesmoved to Mason City into their son James' home.  They are reported inthe 1938 city directory.  Then in 1939, Frances (Fannie) is reportedas a widow.  Edmond's death is reported in Mason City, Iowa, in 1939.I have not found any records of him between 1934 and 1938.  In all thedirectories for Mason City, he is listed as though his name wasEdward:  Edw W.

In 1940, Frances is again listed in the Mason City, Iowa, CityDirectory.  She is reported as a widow, which matches the informationabout Edmond's death in 1939 in Mason City.  Her son James L andJames' son Verlin A are in the directory.  James and his wife areliving at the same address.  There is also a single female named Helenat Frances' address.  I cannot identify Helen from previousinformation.
