We also see here Winnie's mother Talitha Green Jackson.  The child Fannie C Randolph, listed as a sister-in-law of Newton Philpot, is Winnie's half-sister, Talitha's daughter by her second husband Elijah Randolph.  We are told that Elijah left them shortly before Fannie's birth in 1881.  It appears from this listing that Talitha went back to using her first married name.

All the census reports have Mississippi as the birth place of Newton.  One genealogy tells us that it was in Tishomingo County.  No source is given for this information.  Dwight Owens lacks the marriage and death details, but provides the name and some information on Newton's parents.

Newton's son Samuel Clarence reported in his WWI registration that his father was born in Booneville, Mississippi, which is in Prentiss County.  Since this is the only report I have seen from a member of the family, I am reporting this as Newton's place of birth.

In 1910, the family is in the same area, which has now become Washington Township of the small Love County, Oklahoma.

1910 Federal Census, Love County, Oklahoma, 2 May, Washington Township, District 173. page 7B-8A, Hse #139, Fam #140

Filpot, Earl H Son M W 3  OK MS OK Farm Laborer [b abt 1907]

We can tell from the birth dates and ages of the children in these two censuses that Newton and Alice were married in Texas, where the first child Lienelin (?) was born.  They moved to Indian Territory between December 1890 and January 1893 when Gertie was born.  We find Talitha missing from this household and may assume she died sometime since the 1900 census.  No one has found the exact death date or place for Talitha.

By 1920, Newton has moved his family to east central Oklahoma, to the city of Ada, in Pontotoc County.  Alice has died since the last census, and only the two sons Joseph Ralph and Earl Haskell are with him in the home.

1920 Federal Census, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, 21 January, Ada City, Ward 4 (Fount), District 165. page 20B, 601 West 17th, Hse #378, Fam #479

In 1920 we have a third state of birth given for Newton's father.  In 1900 it was Tennessee, in 1910 Illinois, and now we are told he was born in Kentucky.  His mother's birthplace was also changed over the three censuses from Mississippi to US to Alabama.

In this census we learn Joseph's middle name, since he is listed as J Ralph, while in 1910 he was Joseph R.  In his father's obituary we see him referred to as Joe, while his younger brother is referred to by his full name Earl Haskell.

In 1930, Newt is living in the household of his married son Joseph Ralph.

The 1940 census for Newton shows he is living with his son Joseph in Ada.  Living next door is another son, Samuel Clarence.  At some point S C moved to Oklahoma City.  Co-researcher Cindy Beam, a grandchild of Fannie Randolph, located and shared with me the Obituary of Newton Philpot, from the Ada (Oklahoma) Evening News of 7 July 1957.  This tells us that Newton died on Friday 5 July 1957 in Oklahoma City, where they had been living for about 4 years with his son, S C Philpot, after becoming ill.

    NEWTON PHILPOT

Newton Philpot, 89, resident of Ada from 1917 until he became ill about four years ago and moved to Oklahoma City to be with a son, S. C. Philpot, died at Oklahoma City, Friday night [5 July 1957] at 8:40.

Funeral services will be held Monday [8 July 1957] at 4 in Oklahoma City at the Hunter Funeral Home with burial in an Oklahoma City cemetery.

Mr. Philpot, a construction worker, came to Ada in 1917 from Sulphur Springs, Tex.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ellen Terry, Tahoka, Tex.; sons, Joe of Ada, S. C. of Oklahoma City and Earl Haskell of California; several grandchildren and a great grandchild.

--  The Ada Evening News, Ada, Oklahoma, Sunday, 7 July 1957, p 2
    ----------------------------------------

Note that his obituary says he moved to Ada in 1917 from Sulphur Springs, Texas.  But the 1900 census reports him and his family resident in Chickasaw Nation and the 1910 census matches this with a residence in Washington Township in Love County, Oklahoma.  So he must have lived in Sulphur Springs earlier, but after the birth of their first child, Lou Ellen in 1890, they moved to Chickasaw Nation.  All the other children were reported born in Chickasaw Nation, from 1893 to 1907.  This means they moved to Chickasaw Nation about 1892.  So he moved to Ada from Love County.

His move is reported to have been in 1917, the year that Winnie died.  She is buried in Ada.  It is possible she died there after they moved instead of in Love County.  There is no death record.

A cousin and co-researcher Beverly HIll discovered that Newt was buried in the Sunnyvale Cemetery (in Del City, Oklahoma).

We are told that they moved to Ada in 1917 from Sulphur Springs, Texas, to Ada, but in the 1910 census, they were in Love County, Oklahoma.  They had moved there from across the border in Cooke County, Texas in about 1891 or 1892.  Did they move from Love County back to Texas between 1910 and 1917 for only a short time, then move up to Ada in Pontotoc County in 1917?

Newton's obituary above does not give his birth date, but gives his age as 89.  This would make his birth in approximately 1868.  This is consistent with his birth date reported in the 1900 census of January 1868.

Among the survivors, note that his daughter Lou Ellen is reported as living in Tahoka (Lynn County), Texas.  In the 1930 census, her brother Clarence was there also, living in the Terry household.  I have found only two Philpots in the Tahoka Cemetery register, and I cannot connect them with this family.  They must be related, and Elvis Philpot was born in the same period as Ellen and her siblings.  But the last brother we have record of, Earl, was born in 1907, and Elvis Philpot was born in 1911.
