Notes

  • Iowa, Marriages, 1851-1900
    Samuel Carpenter
    Spouse Nancy D Forsyth
Marriage 13 Sep 1891 Appanoose County, Iowa

I got Nancy's maiden name from her daughter Amanda Carpenter Briscoe's birth record.  This record report's Amanda's mother's maiden name as Forsythe.  This was also reported by the California Death record for Amanda.

Iowa, Births and Christenings Index, 1857-1947
    Amanda Luella Carpenter
Birth 30 Jul 1892 Caldwell Twp, Appanoose, Iowa
    Father's Name Samuel Carpenter
    Father's Birth Place Iowa
    Father's Age 26
    Mother's Name Nancy D Forsythe
    Mother's Birth Place Iowa
    Mother's Age 21

This birth record also is the first I have seen that provides Amanda's full middle name.  All the city directories and censuses with a middle initial have Amanda E.  I suspect that the middle initial E is for Ella, a nickname or short form for her full middle name Luella.  In the 1920 census Amanda and her husband are enumerated with Nancy and Sam in Montana.
