Notes

  • 1850 Federal Census, Itawamba County, Mississippi, 2 November,District 6, page 133 (scan 368), Hse #904, Fam #911
John Barnett 28 M Farmer  Georgia [born abt 1822]
Minerva Barnett 26 F South Carolina [born abt 1824]
Caroline  Barnett 12 F Alabama [born abt 1838]
Frances Barnett 4 F Mississippi [born abt 1846]

We have a problem here with the age reported for Frances, as for otherchidlren in the family.  Only a 7-year gain in the 1860 census.

1860 Federal Census, Itawamba County, Mississippi, 20 June, PO GunTown, page 1 (scan 219), Hse/Fam #2
    Barnett, John 36 M Farmer  $200 real $1125 personal  Georgia [born abt1824]
Barnett, Minerva 38 F South Carolina [born abt 1822]
Barnett, Francis (Frances) A 11 F Mississippi [born abt 1849]

For some reason Frances' marriage record has her middle initial as D.(Thsi is the transcription; the orignal is not available on my primarysource, Ancestry.com.

    Mississippi Marriages, 1776-1935
    W. T. Boren
    Spouse: Francis D. Barnett
Marriage 9 Dec 1869 Alcorn County

Some Boren genealogies mention the idea that Francis was fullbloodedChoctaw.  Some make reference to the mother of Minerva Boren, FrancisBarnett, as of Choctaw background.  Francis' father was a European, soshe is not full blood of any Native American nation.  Fraancis(Frances) is the granddaughter of Minerva Taylor Ownes Barnett andJohn B Barnett.  Minerva Taylor Owens John B Barnett was of Cherokeebackground, not Choctaw.

Perhaps the Boren family line has some Choctaw background, but we haveno indication that the Barnetts did.  The Owens line mentions onlyCherokee in the records and referenced I have seen.  Barnett familyresearchers/descendants have worked together on the records and familytraditions reconstructing the story of Minerva Owens Barnett.  FrancisBarnett could not have been a full-blood Choctaw. Her Native Americanheritage would be Cherokee, but she could not be full blood, since herfather was of European extraction.  Minerva Taylor Ownes Barnett diedabout 1903 in Ft Gibson, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.
