George joined the Confederate army. He went home to visit on a 30-day leave and conditions were so bad, he could not stand to leave Hannah alone to deal with things while he went back to the war. He overstayed his leave, and the army sent a force to take him. He was court-martialed for desertion and executed by the Confederate army in 1864. See more of the story in his Notes.
