Married Enoch Avery JACKSON

Notes

  • In 1900 at the April census, Mary Frances Gracy has recently marriedher husband Enoch A Jackson (reported as married 0 years).  They areliving with her parents and 5 of her siblings in the same household, but enumerated as a separate family.

    1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 4 June,Township 8, District 151, page 2A, Hse/Fam #17
    Jackson, Enoch A  Son-in-law W M Oct 1876  23 Married less than 1 yrTX GA GA
Jackson, Mary F  Daughter W F June 1883  16 Married less than 1 yr TXTN TX

This census reports her birth date as June 1883.  The date on hergravestone, however, is 26 June 1882.  For some reason, the birthdates on very many of these 1900 census reports are one year off.  Thesame thing occurs with her husband's birth date.  The 1900 censusabove tells us that Wylie and Hannah (Mollie) married about 1881(married 19 years).  This is consistent with the report of birth oftheir daughter Mary Frances in June 1882, the date on Mary Frances'gravestone.  Mary Frances and Enoch Jackson are living in the Gracyhousehold.

In 1910, I find Enoch and Mary still in Love County, Oklahoma, intheir own household with their two sons:
    1910 Federal Census, Love County, Oklahoma, 15 April, HickoryTownship, District 169, p 1A, Hse/Fam #6

Jackson, Jeff Son M W 6 OK OK TX
Jackson, Ethel Dau F W 3 OK OK TX
Jackson, Lee W Son M W 7 months OK OK TX

In 1930, Mary is a widow and her widowed mother is living in herhousehold.  Mary is head of the household as a widow with threechildren still at home.  The enumeration listing is unusual.  Jeff isshown as head.  The enumerator wrote Jeff first, listing him as Headof the household with Mary as Mother.  Then he changed therelationships to show Mary as Head and Jeff as Son.  But he left theother relationships as he had originally entered them, in relationshipto Jeff.  So Molly Gracy is reported as Grandmother, even though nowMary has been redesignated as Head of the household.

1930 Federal Census, Love County, Oklahoma, 12 April, HickoryTownship, District 4, page 5A, Hse #91, Fam #93

They are living next door to her son William F and family.

Mary's gravestone presents her name as Mrs E A Jackson.  She is buriedin Lakeview Cemetery, Love County, Oklahoma.  But she died in Vernon,Wilbarger, Texas.

Mary Frances' death certificate was found by my cousin Marion Mixon. The date of birth on the certificate has a different year (1879) fromthat on the grave (1882), but provides some excellent detail to fillout our understanding of Mary Frances and her parents.  The place ofbirth of both her parents is specified, whereas before we had only thestate.  The date of death is also a year later than the Find a Gravetranscription.  On the photo of the grave, I cannot actually read thefinal number of the year of death.

I would normally trust the informant's report to the doctor recordedon the death certificate. However, in this case, the date of birthwould be when her mother was only 14. This is possible, but notlikely.  The doctor might have got the date wrong, transcribed itincorrectly, or maybe the informant, Mary's brother Claude, got thedate wrong.  The date on the grave matches more closely with thecensus age reports, which yield a year of birth of 1882-1884.  The1900 census reports her birth date as Jun 1883, one year later, which, for some reason, is often the case with that census.

Another definitive reference is when her parents were married.  The1900 census above tells us that Wylie and Hannah (Mollie) marriedabout 1881 (married 19 years).  This is consistent with the report ofbirth of their daughter Mary Frances in June 1882, the date on MaryFrances' gravestone.  Mary Frances and Enoch Jackson are living in theGracy household.
