Notes

  • I remember Aunt Mabel from my earliest years. We would visit heroften, as she lived in Chickasha, Oklahoma, the same town as mygrandparents.  Even as an adult, I do not remember ever knowing hermiddle name.  Mabel had been divorced earlier, and I never knew herhusband Oscar.

1910 Federal Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 2 May, District #239,p #18A, P #251, Wall Township, Marlow City, Fourth Ward, Family #347:
    Jenkins, Joseph A. Head M W 43 m-2 9-yrs TX SC MS City Marshall
    Jenkins, Julia V. Wife F W 29 m-1 9-yrs 5/4 GA GA TX (should be NC)
Jenkins, Mabel Dau F W 8 s OK TX TX

Mabel is not in the 1920 census with her parents.  I have not yetfound her in a 1920 census record.

I note that in the 1910 census Mabel's mother is reported as born inGeorgia in Julia's own listing, but in Mabel's record she is reportedas born in Texas!  I have found that the Texas birth place is right, though there was some confusion in the children's reports from censusto census and in later memories reported to their children.

In 1912 Mabel went to British Columbia with her mother and siblings.A Canadian Immigration record reports their entry at White Rock,British Columbia, on their way to join Mary's father Joseph Asa inVancouver.  The family went to Vancouver by train.  This record saysall the children were born in Texas, like Jennie, though from familyand public records, we know all the children were born in Marlow,Oklahoma.

Jenkins, Carthal age Male 3 Farmer Born Texas Citizen of Texas TrainCMR 356 from Oklahoma to Vancouver

In the 1930 census Mabel's mother is now reported as born in Georgia, where we have been seeing reports for Texas on other censuses, asdiscussed in Notes for Jennie.  This is what the family had handeddown, but several censuses report either Jennie herself as born inTexas, or children's entries showing their mother born in Texas.

Mabel's middle name is spelled Claire in the Epperson Genealogy, butit appears as Clare in Jenkins Family History by Harold K Christian. This is also the spelling in notes taken by Lou Ila Jenkins, thoughtto be information from Jennie Jenkins, Mabel's mother.  In 2013 I alsofound family photos with Mabel's name on the back written in hermother's handwriting

I found that her name on her gravestone is spelled Mable.  It is hardto tell why this error would have occurred.  I never saw it spelled infamily sources other than Mabel.  I later found that this is thespelling of her name in the 1930 census.  I have commonly seen thename spelled Mabel, though I have found that some people spell thename Mable, as on the gravestone.  I found that on the FairlawnCemetery Registry, the name is spelled as Mabel, despite the error onthe gravestone.

Mabel and Oscar divorced soon afte the 1930 census.  His daughter withhis new wuife Frances is reproted as 8 years old in 1940.  So theyprobably got married in 1931.

In the 1940 census, Mabel is the Divorced head of the household withher two children Charles Kerwyn and Veva June.  Note that theenumerator wrote Charles' name as Charles C, though his middle namewas Kerwyn, as reported in the 1930 census.  Veva June was enumeratedearlier in her father's household, about 7 days before thisenumeration of her mother's household.
