Notes

  • Thomas Asa was known to the family as Asa.  My father (and maybe othersiblings) called him "Acy."  This was also an early nickname for mygrandfather Joseph Asa.  One family source records Joseph Asa's birthunder the name Joseph Acy Jenkins.

    1910 Federal Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 2 May, District #239,p #18A, Wall Township, Marlow City, Fourth Ward, Family #347:

    In 1912, Asa was taken to British Columbia, Canada, along with all hisbrothers and sisters.  His mother Jennie was going by train to joinher husband Joseph
    Asa, who was working on a highway project there.

    Asa married Nova Bernice Grubbs.  The 1930 census reports they hadjust married that year.  Asa and Nova met and married in Fort Cobb,Caddo County, Oklahoma.  By at least 1936, Asa and Nova moved toAnadarko, where they lived the rest of their life.

    In May 2007, on a visit to Oklahoma, the following information wasgiven to me by my cousin Asa Lee Jenkins, son of Thomas Asa Jenkins:
    ===============
    In 1936 Asa went into business with his father-in-law James Grubbs inAnadarko, Oklahoma.  They were originally in the appliance business,but after Mr. Grubbs died in 1941, Asa bought out Grubbs' share fromhis family.  In 1956 Asa expanded by buying a furniture store in town,which he later merged with the appliance business into one store.  Asawas in business till he retired in 1962, when he closed the business.

    Asa's son Asa Lee decided in 1962 to open his own, separate furniturebusiness.  He was in business with this store until he retired andsold it in 1983.  After his retirement, his lawyer son, Larry WadeJenkins, prevailed upon him to go into title work for him.

    The Social Security Death Index reports a quite different date ofdeath from that reported by Harold Christian from family sources.Harold reports 24 January 1966, while the SSDI says (month only) May1969.  There is also a discrepancy in birth dates:  Christian: 3November 1903, SSDI: 11 March 1903.

    Thomas Asa was buried in Memory Lane Cemetery in Anadarko, alsoreferred to as the Anadarko Cemetery.  I have not been there to viewthe grave.  But there is a photo on the Find a Grave Memorial citedbelow, as well as for his wife Nova Grubbs Jenkins.  I found that forsome reason, Asa and Nova are missing form the registry of thatcemetery on OKGen Web. The grave has the same death date as the SSDI,but the birth date is the same as reported by Harold Christian.(http://www.okcemeteries.net/caddo/mlane/jmlane.htm) An earlierregistry that was on RootsWeb had Asa listed but not Nova.

    Updates I submitted ot Asa's memorial on Find a Grave were added inFebruary 2015.
