  • Benjamin Dean McSwain is the son of one of the original immigrantsfrom North Carolina to Arkansas County, Arkansas.  His parents werePhillip K and Martha McSwain, both born in North Carolina, though tappears they did not marry till after the McSwains' arrival inArkansas.  (The 1930 census errs for some reason in reporting Bennie'smother born in South Carolina, while his father was born in NorthCarolina.)

Benjamin went by Bennie all his life, and this is the name on hisgravestone.  He was listed as Benjamin in the 1900 census.  I foundhis middle name Dean in his WWI Draft Registration information.

Phillip and all his brothers appear in the Giles County, Tennessee, inthe 1870 census, and no wives are with them.  Since that census didnot report marital status, it is not certain, but it appears they wereall still single.

In 1900 and 1910 he is listed as Benjamin.  The 1900 census tells ushe was born in Arkansas in June 1886.  This matches other sources forhis date of death.

Bennie was reported as 24 years old in the April 1910 census, but hisbirthday as reported from family and public sources is 23 June 1886.So he had not yet had his 24th birthday.  I recall in this regard thatthe 1900 census had reported his birthday as February 1886, whichwould make him already 24 in April 1910.

Bennie was still in Ethel, Arkansas (Prairie township) when heregistered for the WWI Draft.  The registration took place in StCharles on 5 June 1917.  He is reported as married, but his wife'sname is not given on the registration.  This card reports that he wasborn in Ethel, and now lives in Ethel, working as a Farmer on 3 acresof cotton.

In the 1920 census, Bennie has married Nona Rownd, from a neighbouringfamily in Prairie Township, Arkansas County.  They were living inLittle Rock, then for the 1930 census they were reported in Memphis,Tennessee.

The full name is Benjamin, so reported in the census of 1900.  He isreported as Ben in 1910.  His name  in the Social Security Death Indexis simply Bennie, as is his son's.  His grave marker has the nameBennie D.

Though the SS Death Index gives his place of death as Los Angeles,California, he is buried in Mt Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel, Arkansas, where his parents Phillip and Martha Elizabeth and other familymembers are buried.  The people who appear to be his wife Mary, hisson Bennie and the son's wife Jennie all died in Aurora, Colorado. They would have lived in Arkansas until after the institution ofSocial Security, since all 4 had SS cards issued in Arkansas.  Thefirst year of the SS Death Index was 1937.

It seems they moved from Arkansas to California, where they lived tillthe elder Benjamin died, after which his wife Mary moved with her sonto Colorado.  Otherwise, perhaps the son Bennie and Jennie had movedto Colorado in the meantime, and the mother joined them after thedeath of Bennie D in 1969.
