Notes

  • In the 1850 census there is a record for an Alford Martin of the right age in Shelby County, Texas, on the border with Louisiana.  He is rooming with a Cartwright family.  Alford is reported as the 5-year-old son of an Easter (Esther) Martin with other siblings.  She appears to be a widow related to the Cartwrights, perhaps the younger sister of Robert Cartwright, the 41-year-old head of this household.

In 1880 A M and Lovy were enumerated with their children in Parker County, Texas.  For some reason, the enumerator lists the relationship of everyone in the household as Son, including A M's wife Lovy and all the girls!  Also he has reversed the birth states for mother and father of the children.

On James' death certificate, his wife Mattie reports A M's birth state as Louisiana. This is probably due to faulty memory, since they were living in Louisiana when James' older sister Sarah was born, according to the 1880 census. ABT 1844 in Texas 1 2
