Notes

  • On his daughter Fannie's death certificate, James C is referred to as Cam.  Many have assumed this nickname referred to Cameron.  Most genealogies have the name as Cameron, some only the nickname commonly in records, Cam.  But it could be short for Campbell.  This is what Edmonds researcher Shirley has determined from her investigations.

Shirley has looked through records and archives and never find any instance of Cameron, only Cam.  But I have also found there is some association with Campbell.  And I have found records for a Campbell familiy as Camel.  “Camel” is a regional/dialectic pronunciation, a phonetic variation,  for “Campbell.”  Adam Campbell in this genealogy is documented in records as Adam Camel, and all his children with the last name Camel.  The Cam middle name for James likely stood for Campbell.

"My 4th great grandpa is David Edmonds birth Mar 22,1826, son of John & Penelopy Edmonds, brother to James (Cam), John, George, Louisa, Polly, Elmore & Shadrach.  I'm not sure of David's exactly birth location, but he lived most of his life around Piney, Loudon, Roane [County], Tennessee.  He married Sarah (Sallie) Thomas."

C Edmonds is James' second wife Catherine White.  Delilah (or Delia) Hall was the mother of daughters Edie and Fannie E.

There is a third child reported by some researchers, John P, born in August 1850, who would be 10 years old at census time in 1860.  But he is in the household of Delilah's supposed sister Annie.  It seems likely that Delilah died in childbirth with John, and his sister began raising him.  Three months later Cam married Katherine (Catherine) White, as reported in the marriage record above.

I have found most genealogies report James died in Jefferson County, Tennessee.  But his last two children are reported born in NC and his widow is in NC in 1880.  Their last child was born in 1867.  There is some uncertainty, though, because of discrepancies in the birth states reported for the older children.  William and Marcena (Martha) are reported born in North Carolina, while Elijah, born between them, is reported born in Tennessee!

In the 1870 census, all three children were reported born in Tennessee.  And all other records of residence, including 1860-70 census, indicate they were living in Jefferson.  If the last two children really were born in North Carolina, this would seem to indicate that James moved the whole family there about 1875 and died there.  I have not found a record of his burial.
