    Moss Merseles (Snooky) Butler, 96, a retired farmer, died Wednesday, October 06, 2010, at Indywood Glen in Greenwood, Mississippi.

    Mr. Butler was born on October 15, 1913 in Jonestown, Mississippi, the son of George Washington Butler and Elizabeth Salter Butler. He graduated from Jonestown High School in 1932, attended Millsaps College in Jackson, then graduated from Mississippi State College in Starkville in 1937, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He received a degree in Civil Engineering at Mississippi State and then earned a Degree in Law from the Jackson School of Law in 1940.

    He operated farming interests near Jonestown for many years, where he was a member of the Jonestown United Methodist Church and served as chairman of the Board of Stewards until the church closed in 2003. He subsequently joined St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Clarksdale. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason and a shriner.

    Mr. Butler had many interests. He was a member of the Mississippi State Bar Association in addition to being a Registered Professional Engineer. He served as a director of the Mississippi School Board Association and locally, he was a member of the Coahoma County School Board where he served as president for 16 years. He also served as president of the Jonestown Cemetery Board, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Jonestown Peanut Corporation, the Board of Directors of the Jonestown, and the Board of Directors of the Coahoma County Farm Bureau.

    Mr. Butler was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Merle Weaver Butler.

    Survivors include his son, George W. (Bunky) Butler and his wife, Audrey, his daughter Elizabeth Melton and her husband, Floyd of Greenwood, his daughter Merlyn Dodson and her husband, Jack, of Clarksdale, and his daughter Anne Butler of Overland Park, Kansas;

    seven grandchildren, George Butler and wife Leigh of Jackson, Allison Butler Fielder and husband Allen of Jackson, Floyd Melton III and wife Lisa of Greenwood, Moss Melton and wife Shannon of Greenwood, Blewett Melton of Nashville, TN, Rob Dodson and wife Meredith of Franklin, TN, and Lyn Dodson of Atlanta, GA.;

    twelve great grandchildren, Brent and Kathryn Butler of Jackson, Walker and Abby Fielder of Jackson, Floyd IV and Anne Craig Melton of Greenwood, Ainsley and Salter Melton of Greenwood, Grace, Ava, and Lily Dodson of Franklin, TN, and Gates Allen of Oxford, MS.;

    nieces Barbara Butler and husband Don Ringsmuth of East Hampton, NY, Suzy Butler Hutton of Long Beach, CA, Dibba Butler Hamilton and husband Ben of Hampton, V A., Carolyn Little Kennington and husband Bruce of Ocean City, MD, and Barbara Jordan Fuller and husband Robert of Osceola, AR.
