    Obituary for Dr. McCoy

Dr. Doyle McCoy was a nature Oklahoman and always maintained a very keen interest in the natural vegetation of our state. The eastern rural hills of Grady County provided the environment for his childhood and early teens, until high school graduation at Bradley. A Bachelor of Science degree was earned at East Central University with a major in biological sciences. A Master of Science degree was earned at Oklahoma University with a botany major. Work toward a completion of each degree provided good oppurtunities for field work in an area of botany that he found challenging - native plant identification.

His wife, the former Pearl Hayes is also a native Oklahoman. She is now retired after serving as a librarian in senior high school and University libraries. They recently observed their sixty - sixth wedding anniversery. Their only daughter, Judy, resides in Lindsay, Oklahoma after teaching in Texas. Their only grandson, Allen Simons resides in Burnet, Texas with his wife Alisse and daughters Teegan and Andri.

Five books for which Dr. McCoy was the author [are] A Study of Flowering Plants, Roadside Flowers of Oklahoma, volume 1, Roadside Flowers of Oklahoma volume 2, Roadside Trees and Shrubs of Oklahoma and Oklahoma Wildflowers.

Dr. McCoy was preceded in death by his parents George and Jewel McCoy, a brother Lloyd McCoy and a sister Lavel.

Dr. Doyle McCoy died at 8:35 a.m., December 11, 2002, at his home in Lindsay, Oklahoma. Services will be Saturday, December 14, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Lindsay where he was a member.
