Notes

  • Family history of the Gregorys of Oklahoma reports Amanda's birthday as 22 February 1861, but we see that she was recorded in the 1860 census as 4 months old in June.

1860 Federal Census, Pickens County, Georgia, 25 June, PO Marble Works, page 953, Hse #628, Fam #535

    Tatum, Elizabeth 18 F W Georgia
    Tatum, Amanda 4 months F W Georgia [b abt Feb 1860]

The month of February matches the age of 4 months reported in the census.  The year should be 1860.  The year was somehow recorded wrong or remembered wrongly in family memory.

Family memory reports that they were married in Marietta, Chickasaw Nation.  Marietta is in what became Love County, Oklahoma, north of the Red River from Cook County, Texas.  James Toliver's family lived in or near Gainesville, and were registered in the 1860 census.  But I have not found them in the 1880 census.  They may have actually lived across the border in Chickasaw Nation even at the time of the marriage, as the family tradition report.

Note that both area stated to be residents of Cook County, Texas.  the county seat is Gainesville, just south of the Red River.  The next year Toliver and Mandy's first child was born in Marietta, Love County, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory.  They are enumerated there in the 1900 census.

In 1910 and 1920, we find Amanda and her second husband James Toliver Green in Richland Township (near Marlow) of Stephens County, Oklahoma.  Marlow is the county seat of this county.  This is where I recall as a child meeting their children, my great aunts.

Marlow is not far from Lindsay, in Garvin County, and Chickasha, in Grady County.  These towns, both about a half-hour drive north of Marlow, were where my grandparents of each side lived, so on occasion we would go to Marlow for visits or family gatherings.  I have cousins and their descendants living there now.

I also later discovered that my grandmother Jenkins, Julia Virgina Terry, also had brothers and sisters living in Marlow, where they had all grown up.  I do not remember ever knowing this, until I began research that family a in 2006.  Marlow is where my grandparents Jenkins married and lived for some time.

Amanda Tatum is listed in both 1910 and 1920 as Mandy.  In 1910, Amanda's middle initial is shown as J, instead of A.  There is no middle name or initial in 1920.  James Toliver is listed in 1910 as James T and in 1920 as James.  Their three daughters are still at home with them in 1920:  Effie, Stella and Lizzie.

Amanda is buried in the Center Cemetery, Center, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma.  Her gravestone has the name as Amanda Green.  I have not found out when she moved to Center from Marlow.

Lou Ila Gregory Jenkins gave me the marriage date, as well as the birth dates for both James Toliver Green and Amanda Tatum West.  Loretta Gregory Gay gave me the place of marriage.  Their certificate of marriage was also found.  The year from Lou Ila and that on Amanda's grave are different.  Family information conveyed by Lou Ila has the year as 1860, but her grave has 1861.
