Notes

  • Jean-Baptiste Caillot was born in Illinois, a part of New France, one year before the territory was taken from France by the British.  Jean-Baptiste was nicknamed LaChance ("dit LaChance," meaning "called LaChance").  In English this means "Chance".  Such names were given to French soldiers.  The "dit" name LaChance was given to his father Nicholas Caillot dit LaChance, and he apparently continued that as part of his name designation, as I have found was common in some generations.

A family genealogy shows the name "dit LaChance" for all the sons of Nicholas.  Sometimes the "dit" name would become so well known that it would be taken as the name of the family lineage in subsequent generations.  Nicholas was born in France, and came to Louisiana Territory of New France as a young man, where he did spend some time in service as a solider.

A descendant, Mary Jo Freeman, states in her genealogy of the Dumont family that Nicholas was enumerated in the 1798 census of New France, where he stated he had been born in France.  Mary Jo from her research thought it likely Nicholas was born in the Rhône River Valley.  Jean-Baptiste and all his siblings were born in Kaskasia.  He was born in 1762, while it was still French territory.

Nicholas married Marianne Giard about 1741 in Kaskasia, Illinois, (now Randolph County,) New France, where Marianne was born.  Mary Jo says that Nicholas and Marianne moved to Sainte Geneviève, Missouri, with Jean-Baptiste, after they married.  Factors seem to indicate this would be after Jean-Baptiste's second marriage, to Therèse Gossiau, on 23 July 1787.  This would make their move likely in the winter of 1787.

In 1803, the year Louisiana Territory was purchased by the USA, Jean-Baptiste is listed by his anglicized name, John B Caillot.  He and Therèse were living at that time on a land grant in New Madrid County, Missouri Territory, USA.
