Notes

  • Sainte Geneviève, where Félicité was born, was the first white settlement in what became known as Missouri.  In 1735, French lead miners and hunters settled in the location in New France.  Félicité was born there on 27 June 1791 (27 February 1791 in some sources).  Missouri was part of Louisiana Territory, and thus part of the Louisiana Purchase that the USA bought from France in 1803.

The Arkansas Marriage Records report her marriage to Louis Dumont on 20 May 1810, in Arkansas County.  Family sources indicate they married in Arkansas Post.  This record spells her name as Felicite Caloit.

    Dumont, Louis

An article in the Grand Prairie Historical Society Bulletin reports details for Félicité as follows:
"Felicite Caillot (b 27 June 1971 bpt Ste Genevieve MO 29 Mar 1871 d in Desha Co 1860-62.  Signed marriage contract before Andre Fagot at Arkansas Post AR on 20 May 810 with Louis Dumont, son of Jean Pierre Dumont and Genevieve Lecuyer".
--  "Some Descendants of Marie Messager" (Grand Prairie Historical Society Bulletin, October 1980)

In March 2008, a few days after finding several genealogies with various information on the Dumont-Dumond family lineage, I found widow Félicité and some of her children in the 1840 census.  This was an interesting find, since the censuses before 1850 give the name of only the head of household.

I found a listing for Lewis Dumont in Arkansas Township of Arkansas County, Arkansas.  Censuses before 1850 also give only the number of males or females in 5-10 year age ranges.  The oldest male in the household of Lewis was 20-30 years old, while the oldest female was 60-70 years old.

Working out the members of the household, I found the household matched the family of Louis B Dumont, minus Louis and older children.  This was Félicité and most of her children, and the enumerator had listed the oldest son, Lewis, as head of the household.

1840 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, Arkansas Township, p 2
Lewis Dumont  2 Males 5-10 [Reges, Israel]  2 Males 15-20 [Caliste, Pierre]  1 Male 20-30 [Lewis]
    2 Females 5-10 [Mannett and ?]  1 Female 10-15 [Virginia]  1 Female 50-60 [Félicité]

The estate settlement of Félicité in 1862 includes the name of Felicite Pertuis as one of the heirs.  The source analyzing this settlement record along with other official records (Grand Prairie Historical Society Bulletin, October 1980) indicates that this Felicite Brinsback is the daughter of a Felicite Dumond, who was the daughter of Louis and Felicity (Félicité) Dumond.  This source indicates that Felicite daughter of Louis and Felicity was born between 1810 and 1815.  Thus she would have apparently been out of the house and not counted in the 1840 census.  All the children are accounted for there except one female child between 5 and 10 (and thus born between 1830 and 1835).

In 1840, Lewis/Louis, son of Louis B Dumont, would have been 24, matching this entry.  Félicité would have been 49, based on her recorded birth date, which is consistent in various family genealogies, based on records in New France.  Her birthday was 27 June 1791.  So perhaps she mis-stated her age.  We find that a lot in this period of time.  The age groupings of the other children match those found in the genealogies.

Since Louis is the oldest son here, this means that Jean-Baptiste, who was one year older than Louis, is either already married or out working away from the home.  I have not yet found a listing for him in the 1840 census.  There is a possible listing for him in the Desha County Militia in 1861,under the entry J Dumond, but another family genealogy reports his death in 1938.  No record of a marriage of Jean-Baptiste has been found.

The two youngest boys are Reges (Roger) of the genealogies, which probably is the name Regis, and Israel.  In one sources the name is spelled Reyes. The two older boys are Caliste and Pierre; the older girl would be Virginia.  The two young girls are Mannett and another daughter that the genealogies do not account for.  In have still not found out who this might be.  Further, I have not found her in the 1850 census.  Where would this 11-15 years old girl be in 1850?  Perhaps the extra girl int eh 1840 census is a child that died before the 1850 census.

I did find information about another daughter not in the genealogies.  In May 2008, I found a discussion on a Dumont genealogy list posting information from the will of Louis, probated after Félicité's death.  This includes the name of Frances, who is reported to have been born about 1810-15.

In 1850, all the Dumont family entries are spelled Dumond.  The Dumont family members are all living close together, and are listed in Chester Township of Desha County.  It is not clear if they have moved, or borders and townships have been changed since earlier information indicating they were in Arkansas County.

Félicité is listed under the English form of her name Felicity.  We note that in 1860, she has apparently given her name with the French pronunciation, because the enumerator spells it Felicita.  In her son Reges (or something similar in this scrawled entry) and younger son Israel [spelled here as Isreal), are with her.  There are also two other children, whose last name appears to be Branton.

1850 Federal Census, Desha County, Arkansas, 1 November, Chester Township, page 71 (141), Hse/Fam #268
Felicita [Félicité] Dumond 42 F [No occupation listed] $1500 Real Estate  born Arkansas
Ragios [? maybe Ragies = Regis] Dumond 21 M born Arkansas
Isreal Dumond 19 M born Arkansas
    Felicity Branton 16 F Arkansas
    Frances Branton 16 F Arkansas

From the first names of the Branton children, Felicity and Frances, it appears they are grandchildren.  I have not been able to tie these two children to the Dumond family line.

The age here has to be wrong, since age 42 would make her born in 1808, but we know her mother died in 1804, and numerous family genealogies from different families intersecting with the Dumonts report her birthday as 27 June 1791.  This appears to be based on government records from Missouri, New France.  There is some uncertainty, as some genealogies report the date as 27 February 1791.

Eldest daughter Virginia lives 4 houses away from her mother, married to Isaac Love, with their first son David listed in the 1850 census.  Between Félicité and Virginia, next door to Félicité, is Caliste and his wife Desirée [spelled Desira here] and their first child Mary.

In 1860, we find Félicité still as the head of a household, but only two children are listed.  We find John, age 14 listed first.  This matches a grandson of Louis and Félicité, son of Pierre who died about 1847-1848, and his wife Mary Pinot.  Mary appears in the 1850 census married to John Stokes, and John and his younger sister Mary Dumond are in that household. At 14, John was born in 1846.

The second child in Félicité's household is her granddaughter Mary Haines, daughter of Mannett (or Manett) Dumont and D B Haines.  We know Mannett died about 1849, and it seems likely her husband died before the 1860 census.  I have found one record in 1850 that might be D B Hains [sic], with a previous wife, the former widow Frances Stillwell, in Arkansas Post.  Both are 35 years old, thus born about 1815.  But there is a child Mary A Haines in that household that would be a child of Frances Stillwell Haines.  I have not found Manett Dumond in 1850.

1860 Federal Census, Desha County, Arkansas, 2 August, Chester Township, PO Redfork, page 13, Hse/Fam #95
Felicita [Félicité] Dumond 65 F Housekeeper $6000 Real Estate  $1200 Personal  born Arkansas
John Dumond 14 M born Arkansas
Mary Haines [granddaughter] 12 F Arkansas

Félicité's age reported here again conflicts with family reports of her birth date.  At 65, she would have been born in 1795.  This is closer to her reported birth in 1791, but differs also with her age in the 1850 census.

Family genealogies report that Felicity/Félicité died between 1860 and 1862.  It was after November 1860, when she appears in the census.  Her death is reported variously as Desha County, Arkansas (last recorded residence) and Arkansas Post, Arkansas County.  We know she lived in Arkansas Post earlier.  I have not actually been there to find a grave.

In April 2008, I found an old posting on a Dumond family discussion list giving us the details of Félicité's estate settlement, which provides a few more details about her descendants.  The settlement is reported in Probate Court March 1862; the exact date of the probate is not given.  That likely means she died in early 1862, perhaps early March.  The ultimate source of this report is an article in the Grand Prairie Historical Society Bulletin in October 1980:  "Some Descendants of Marie Messager."  One paragraph of the article reports on the estate of Louis and Félicité:

"LOUIS DUMONT died in Arkansas County, AR 1833-34.  Because, under the terms of their 1810 marriage contract, all property acquired by the marriage community 'will remain intact for the one who will survive', there was no probate at the time of the death of Louis to assist in identifying issue.  No records were generated until after Felicite's death almost 30 years later."

The full text of the estate settlement for Félicité appears in the Notes for Louis Dumont.
