Notes

  • For along time I did not know Nancy Isabel's maiden name.  In February 2010 I got a message from Jerry Grisham informing me that she was a Henderson.  Here is Jerry's initial note:  "Nancy Isabel Nolastname last name is Evans, daughter of James F. Evans and Sarah Ann Henderson. Sarah Ann was one of 9 brothers and sisters that came to Arkansas County, AR in 1850. Nancy Isabell's grandson Holland married a relative Gladys Henderson and Virgil married a Henderson." --  Jerry Grisham, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 13 February 2010  I later found a few more details about her parents and her siblings from Jerry's website.  See information on James F Evans.  Jerry had found the family in the censuses of 1860 through 1880.  In 1860 James Evans and his family are living in Maurice Township, not far form DeWitt, the southern county seat of Arkansas County, Arkansas.  This census reports him born in Tennessee and his wife Sarah Henderson born in Mississippi.  James F Evans 28 M W Farmer $800 Real Estate $300 Personal Tennessee [abt 1832] Sarah M Evans 24 F W Housekeeping b Mississippi [abt 1836] Margarett A Evans 6 F W b Arkansas [abt 1854] Nancy I Evans 4 F W b Arkansas [abt 1856]  In 1870, it appears that Isabel's mother is the head of the household, and thus likely  widow.  1870 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 27 June, Crockett Township, PO Mount Adams, page 1, Hse/Fam #6 Evans, Sarah 30 F W $300 Personal Estate b Mississippi Evans, Isabel 13 F W born Arkansas Evans, William 10 M W born Arkansas Evans, John 8 M W born Arkansas Evans, Mary 6 F W born Arkansas Evans, Amanda 3 F W born Arkansas  In 1880, the census shows that Sarah moved her family to Bayou Meto township of the same county.  This census reports Sarah's birth state as Tennessee instead of Mississippi.  I favor Mississippi, since her brother Joseph, two years younger than Sarah, was also reported born in Mississippi.  Likewise the 1860 census.  This census also reports Sarah's husband was born in Tennessee, consistent with his report in 1860.  1880 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 23 June, Bayou Meto Township, District 5, page 37, Hse #392, Hse #477 Evans, Sarah W M 44 Keeping House TN TN TN [born abt 1836] Evans, Belle W F 22 Dau AR TN TN [born abt 1858] Evans, William W M 21 Son AR TN TN Evans, John W M 18 Son AR TN TN Evans, Mary W F 16 Dau AR TN TN Evans, Amanda W F 12 Dau AR TN TN  In 1910, we find that Nancy Isabel Kennedy is a widow, her husband Edwin D having died since the 1900 census.  1910 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 2 May, Bayou Meto Township, District 2, page 13A, Hse/Fam #2 Kennedy, Jerome F  Head M W  28 Single AR AR AR Farmer Kennedy, Isabel Mother F W 54 Widow  5 children/4 living AR AL MS Kennedy, Zula H Sister F W 16 AR AR AR Houghton, Walter Hired Man M W 19 AR AR AR Kennedy, Shannon A  Son M W 20  AR AR AR Farm Laborer  In 1920, all the children have left the household except for Jerome, who remains as Head of the household, and his mother Nancy Isabel continues to stay with him.  Note that he is listed as Frank, giving us the middle name for which we had only the initial in 1900 and 1910.  In this census, the enumerator spells her name in the French fashion, Isabelle.  1920 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 28 January, Garland Township, District 9, page 1A, Hse/Fam #4 Kennedy, Frank  Head M W  38 Single AR AR AR Farmer Kennedy, Isabelle Mother F W 64 Widow  AR AL MS  In 1930, Jerome's transition to frank is complete.  The original name Jerome is now reduced to a middle initial J.  1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 25 April, Garland Township, District 7, page 1B, Hse/Fam #12 Kennedy, Frank J Head M W  49 Single AR AR AR Farmer Kennedy, Nancy I Mother F W 74 Widow  AR AL MS  I have found no further information about Nancy Isabel or Jerome Frank after the 1930 census.
