Notes

  • Sources indicate that the parents of Elijah Matterson Hamrick were Samuel I Hamrick and Mary Hamrick.  Birth dates vary.  Paul Sarrett, who has clear and credible research on Hamricks, McSwains and related families, has the date of 1786 for Elijah's M's birth, but does not give a source.  Through another Hamrick researcher I found that a birth record for what appears to be this Elijah Hamrick reports his birth to parents of these same names in 1774.

    Elijah Hamrick
    Father Samuel Hamrick
    Mother Mary Hamrick
    Birth 1774 Rutherford County, NC

This is a 14-year gap, and makes it appear these are two different persons.  But I do not have another Hamrick in this tree born in or near 1786.  There are so many Hamricks of the same name in every generation it is easy to confuse them.  Records of the era also unhelpfully have incomplete names to distinguish individuals, like this record with no middle initials.  Other sources report this Elijah Hamrick with these parents as born in 1774.

Elijah was born in Tryon County.  in 1779, Tryon was cut into smaller counties, initially Rutherford and Lincoln counties

    -----------------------
The original area of Tryon County encompassed the following modern day areas:

    The entire areas of:
Cleveland County, North Carolina, including Kings Mountain
    Gaston County, North Carolina
    Lincoln County, including Ramsour's Mill
    Rutherford County, North Carolina
    Cherokee County, South Carolina
    Chester County, South Carolina
    Laurens County, South Carolina
    Spartanburg County, South Carolina
    Union County, South Carolina
    York County, South Carolina

    ...and parts of:
    Burke County, North Carolina
    McDowell County, North Carolina
    Greenville County, South Carolina
    Newberry County, South Carolina
    The Catawba Indian Reservation

In 1779, Tryon County was divided into Lincoln and Rutherford Counties in North Carolina, and ceased to exist.
