Notes

  • William Henry Vail Yates and Annie Laura Horn married about 1890.  They first lived in Texas, then moved to Oklahoma Territory between 1891 and 1894.

In the 1900 census we find them in Union Township of Washita County, Oklahoma Territory.  This is in the southern aprt of what had been the Cheyenne and Arabpaho Reservation before the establishment of Oklahoma Territory in 1890, a little north of the Washita River.

"The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) extended a line from Chickasha to the northern part of the Kiowa, Comanche and Apache Reservation in 1899. It terminated about two miles from an existing tent city called Oakdale, consisting of a store and post office on the former Cheyenne and Arapaho Reservation. ... Some Oakdale residents obtained land for a new townsite. Platted in May 1899 by the El Reno Development Company, the nearby settlement, with the Wichita Mountains looming on the south and west, was called Mountain View. The Oakdale post office was renamed Mountain View on October 9, 1900."

It is not clear if the last child is listed in the 1910 census.  The sequence would indicate the next child would be Naomi, and with birthday in April, the age would match Naomi's entry in 1910.  But the first letter of the name in 1900 looks very much like a b, and the second letter perhaps a or e.

They probbaly moved south of the river to Mountain View, the renamed Oakdale that was moved about 2 miles south of old Oakdale in 1899, after 1907, when their first child Henry died and was buried in the old Oakdale Cemetery.  In 1910 they are in Mountain View, the relocated and renamed Oakdale.  The 1900 census tells us that William and Annie moved from Texas to Oklahoma Territory between April 1891 and December 1893.

In 1910, they are living in Mountain View, Kiowa County, Oklahoma.

From the birth places and ages of the children we can see that William moved his family from Texas to Oklahoma (Indian Territory) between 1891 and 1894.

The birthplace differs in different sources.  His son Neil Yates declares his birthplace as Freestone County, Texas.  Three genealogies report that William was born in Chireno, Texas, which is in Nacogdoches County.  Others report Nacogdoches County, with no town.  I would tend to favor the place of birth reported by his son.  Details provided by the other sources also, however, lend them credibility.

Early genealogies with reporting Chireno or Nacogdoches County do not report the source of the information that Chireno was the place of birth.  I found two in January 2008 that gave various sources, both family and public records.  It seems likely to me that Neil remembered wrongly, thinking of his knowledge that the family had lived in Freestone County, and associated that also with his father's birth.

William and his son Benjamin Vail moved out to California where the men got jobs working in the oil fields in the 1920s.

William and Annie are reported in the 1928 and 1928 Long Beach city directories but not in the 1930.  This may be when they moved back to Texas.  They both died in Fort Worth, Texas about 20 years later.
