  • William Henry Vail Yates and Annie Laura Horn married about 1890.They first lived in Texas, then moved to Oklahoma Territory between1891 and 1894.

In the 1900 census we find them in Union Township of Washita County,Oklahoma Territory.  This is in the southern aprt of what had been theCheyenne and Arabpaho Reservation before the establishment of OklahomaTerritory in 1890, a little north of the Washita River.

"The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) extendeda line from Chickasha to the northern part of the Kiowa, Comanche andApache Reservation in 1899. It terminated about two miles from anexisting tent city called Oakdale, consisting of a store and postoffice on the former Cheyenne and Arapaho Reservation. ... SomeOakdale residents obtained land for a new townsite. Platted in May1899 by the El Reno Development Company, the nearby settlement, withthe Wichita Mountains looming on the south and west, was calledMountain View. The Oakdale post office was renamed Mountain View onOctober 9, 1900."

It is not clear if the last child is listed in the 1910 census.  Thesequence would indicate the next child would be Naomi, and withbirthday in April, the age would match Naomi's entry in 1910.  But thefirst letter of the name in 1900 looks very much like a b, and thesecond letter perhaps a or e.

They probbaly moved south of the river to Mountain View, the renamedOakdale that was moved about 2 miles south of old Oakdale in 1899,after 1907, when their first child Henry died and was buried in theold Oakdale Cemetery.  In 1910 they are in Mountain View, therelocated and renamed Oakdale.  The 1900 census tells us that Williamand Annie moved from Texas to Oklahoma Territory between April 1891and December 1893.

In 1910, they are living in Mountain View, Kiowa County, Oklahoma.

From the birth places and ages of the children we can see that Williammoved his family from Texas to Oklahoma (Indian Territory) between1891 and 1894.

The birthplace differs in different sources.  His son Neil Yatesdeclares his birthplace as Freestone County, Texas.  Three genealogiesreport that William was born in Chireno, Texas, which is inNacogdoches County.  Others report Nacogdoches County, with no town.I would tend to favor the place of birth reported by his son.  Detailsprovided by the other sources also, however, lend them credibility.

Early genealogies with reporting Chireno or Nacogdoches County do notreport the source of the information that Chireno was the place ofbirth.  I found two in January 2008 that gave various sources, bothfamily and public records.  It seems likely to me that Neil rememberedwrongly, thinking of his knowledge that the family had lived inFreestone County, and associated that also with his father's birth.

William and his son Benjamin Vail moved out to California where themen got jobs working in the oil fields in the 1920s.
