Notes

  • I find Owamie's name spelled several different ways.  Her gravestonehas Owamie, so I have used that as the primary name here.  BertieMcSwain refers to her as Oamie, and this spelling is used by Sue Rowndin correspondence with me.

She appears as Owaimee or similar in a couple of censuses.  It isscrawled in different ways in three different censuses.  In 1910, sheis listed with other children of Bert and Fannie Rownd in PrairieTownship, Arkansas County, Arkansas.

1910 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 22 April, PrairieTownship, District 13, page 4A, Hse/Fam #54
Rownd, Bert Head M W 52  Kansas Unknown Indiana Farm Laborer
Rownd, Fannie E  Wife F W 39  AR AL AL
Rownd, Owaimee  Dau F W 18  AR KS AR

In 1910 she is living with he sister Nona McSwain and her husbandBennie D, and Bennie Junior, in Little Rock.  In that entry it appearsthe first letter is an A rather than an O.  The enumerator appears tohave written Awamie Round.

    1920 Federal Census, Pulaski County, Arkansas, 1 January, Big RockTownship, Little Rock Ward 4, District 129, page 11A, 1424 W Jones,Hse #218, Fam #233
McSwain, Benny Head M W 33 AR NC NC  Farmer, Own Farm
McSwain, Nona Wife F W 29 AR KS AR
Round, Awamie [Owaimee]  Sister-in-Law F W 18 AR KS AR

One oddity about the 1920 census is that Owaimee was enumerated twice. Though she was counted in Little Rock, Arkansas, while there withNona and Bennie, she was also included in the listing for her mother'shousehold in Ethel, Arkansas County.  The census date for that yearwas 1 January, and that is the date of the enumeration in Little Rock.

However, they did not get around to actually taking the census inEthel, Prairie Township, for the page recording the Rownd family, until 3 February.  It appears that during that time, Owaimee returnedhome, and was again counted.  The information given is identical, except for the difference of spelling of her name.  She is listed inEthel as Owaimee.

A compilation reports Owamie's marriage, but gives no date.

    Arkansas, County Marriages Index, 1837-1957
    Owamie Rownd
    Spouse's Name: C E Noble

    1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 3 April, DeWitt,District 16, page 2B, Hse #45, Fam #51
Noble, Charles E Head Renting house M W 35 First married at age 27 ARAR England Carpenter, housing industry
Noble, Owaime A Wife F W 28 First married at age 20 AR KS AR
Noble, Charles E Jr Son M W 7 AR AR AR
Cunningham, Jessie Niece F W 14 AR AR AR

This indicates that Charles E is 7 years old.  But we also see thatOwamie was first married at age 26, just 2 years before this census. On the other hand, Charles Sr was first married at age 27, 8 yearsago.  Thus it appears that Charles was married before, and likely hisfirst wife died.  Charles E would be a son from that first marriage.I do not have the information on that wife. Also in their household wesee a niece, Jessie Cunningham, age 14.  I have not yet figured outthe family connections for this relationship.

But I note that in the 1910 census, Charley is a child, living withhis parents next door to Chester Cunningham.  This would indicate alikelihood that Jessie is Chester and Laduskey's daughter.  Jessie wasborn in 1916.  That would mean that Charley's mother, Elizabeth, waseither the sister of Chester Cunnigham or of his wife Laduskey.  Ihave not found enough details to clarify this.
