Notes

  • Maggie is usually referred to as Maggie or Margaret.  Her name on the death certificate of her son Jacob is given as Laurie M. Lee, birth state Missouri.

Maggie Lee was married four times.  She was first married in Missouri, to Earl Burch, who died after the birth of their two sons, some time before 1920, when Maggie is enumerated as the wife of Walter Jacob Green in Ottawa County, Oklahoma.

Ottawa County is in the northeast corner, bordering Arkansas and Missouri.  There was a third marriage later in life after she moved to California, to R H Glory.  It appears that she was also married a fourth time, to a Schuchard, first name thought to be Robert.

Researcher Winnie Yandell has prepared several memorials on Find A Grave for Green family members.  The memorial of Maggie's son Jake gave us Maggie's maiden name before we found the above marriage to Earl Burch.  But some more helpful details there also help firm up the picture of Maggie, naming her Maggie Lee Green.  (Lee is her maiden name, ref the marriage record above.)  This was the first indication we had of her first husband's name and provenance in Missouri.

"I also talked to Robert A Schuchard in Bentwood, TN confirming marriage of his mother [Rose Mary Tunnell Shchuchard] to Paul Ester Burch. They had little are no contact with Paul or his family. Records show she died as a Schuchard but I found no divorce record. I have updated my tree with research Bev and I have found with a comment on my call to TN."

    --------------------------
Jake Green was the son of Walter Jacob Green (1889-1925) and Maggie Lee Green (1897-1952).

He was one of three children: Eva Lee, Jack, and Jake. They were just babes when their father died in OK, and their mother moved to central Calif. before 1930, where she was in [the household] of her brother-in-law, Pink Green, in 1930 Fresno census--and Jake was listed as "Junior."

Family Tree says his mother, Maggie, married Earl Burch, in MO, and there is a MO Marriage record to that effect. On Jake's funeral card, it says "Officiating: Rev. Paul Burch, brother [half-brother] of Mr. Green" and Dr. Orville Winters. Several Green family were pallbearers. His two siblings, Eva Lee and Jack are buried here.

Walter Jacob Green died in 1925, according to famliy information reported by Winnie Yandell in Pink Green's FAG memorial cited above.  In the 1930 census, Maggie and here children are reported in the household of Jacob's brother Pink Green and they have now removed to Fresno County, California.  This was a dire economic time in the United States, and whole caravans of Oakies moved to California to seek relief.

The following memorial on Pink Green has some details about his brother Walter and the family.

"Another brother, Walter Jacob, had died in 1925 (OK) and the widow with three small children were staying in [the household] with Pink in the 1930 census, Fresno CA, Township 5. The three children--Eva L., Jack, and Walter Jacob (Jake), are bur. in this cemetery as is Pink's brother, Thomas (Tom) Gilbert GREEN."

This note in Pink's memorial by Winnie Yandell was the first indication we had found and gave us new clues to find Oklahoma details on Walter and Maggie, and renewed hope that we might find death information about Walter and Pink's mother Susan A Barnett Green.  The memorialist was also still looking for details, but thought that Susan had moved to California with her sons Pink and Thomas.  This was later confirmed when another cousin researcher found Susan's short obituary in a San Francisco newspaper.

The three children named in Winnie's memorial above appear in the household of Pink Green, who is reported as Maggie Green, sister-in-law.

Some genealogies tell us Maggie's maiden name was Lee.  One provides good information that appears to come from family sources.

Her son Paul Ester Burch reported her name in his Social Security records as Mary M Lee.  The initial M would match the name Margaret, but this is the only record with the name Mary for her.  Several family references and records have her first name as Laurie.

Some genealogies (without documentation or comment) have reported a third marriage of Maggie to someone named Glory.  This is based on the entry of the surname Glory on her census record.  It appears for some reason the enumerator had put the line indicating ditto for her last name (meaning Green, following Pink's entry), then corrected it to the surname Glory for Maggie.  Subsequent information and records we discovered seem to indicate that Maggie married R H Glory before the 1930 census, it looks like only about 1929.  R H appears to be their landlord, and was involved in a land transcation with Pink and maybe Maggie also that seems to be a purchase.  But they lived next door to each other, or across the street.

In July 2015 another record was discovered that indicates he did not die about the time of the 1930 census aa previously thought.  There was an entry at an expected rural Fresno address, next door to Pink Green, for R H Glory.  This fits the living situation we have seen in past records.  So in 1932, R H ws still living, still next door to Pink Green.  In this case, Maggie probably reported herself to the enumerator as a widow in order to avoid the stigma or questions related to a divorce.  No divorce record has been found.

But Maggie does not appear under the name Glory or Green, and no other name is associated with the two rural box addresses for R H Glory or P (Pink) Green.

Glory R H rt 7 Bx 219 (appears to mean Rural Route 7, Box 219, which fits their living situation, p 734)
    Green P rt 7 Bx 218 (p 735)

Maggie is reported as married, but there is no husband in the household.  Could Maggie have already remarried (3rd marriage), but not moved out of Pink's household yet?  SHe appears thereafter under the name Glory.

Another puzzle that might offer a possibility.  Note Pink's WWII draft card below.  The person he says will always know his whereabouts is one R H Groly, whom we have not been able to find.  We might think it is an employer, but Pink reports as "Own Employer," which I take to mean "Self-Employed."

    WWII Draft Registration Cards
    Pink (None) Green
Residence Corner of Golden Red and Whites Bridge, Kerman, Fresno, California
Mailing Address Rt 1, Box 345, Kerman, Fresno, California
    Telephone None, Age 55

Name of contact R H Groly, Rt 1, Box 345, Kerman, Fresno, California
Own Employer, Farm, Rt 1, Box 345, Kerman, Fresno, California
    Signed Pink Green

Maybe the name Groly on the draft card should have been Glory.  I have never heard either as a surname, and cannot find anything on either, under a variety of spellings I tried.  In some voter registration lists there is a Maggie Glory, with no husband in the household, a few box numbers down the road from Pink.  It would appear that this is Maggie Lee Burch Green, widow of Walter Green.  It could be she married a man named Glory, who died before the 1936 rolls were compiled.  The 1940 census reports that they have lived in this location since 1935.

Maggie's box number here is 433, but Pink's is 423?  In 1940 they appear but the addresses are the same, Rt 9, Box 433A.  The report of 423 for Pink in 1936 appears to have been a misprint.

The 1940 census clarifies that they are all in the same household, and that they do live on a Farm, although their road has a street address.  Maggie has the surname Glory, and both she and Pink are reported as widowed.  Maggie is the housekeeper, and her three children are in the household.

But an odd thing is that they are reported by the enumerator as the children of Pink.  I suspect that Pink did not adopt these, as usually this is also noted.  The enumerator most likely learned they were Maggie's children and wrote the relationship in that regard rather to the Head of the household as is usual.  Pink is actually the uncle of Maggie's children.

The Zazelle Beam familiy tree cites a California Death Index entry that appears to correctly represent our Maggie Lee Green Glory.  The middle name given in the transcription is puzzling.  There is no image to view, only the transcribed index entry.

Her grave has only a year birth or death date.  The birth year is rounded off, going by the above exact birth date, or maybe fuzzy from family memory, reporting the year 1890 as the birth date.
