Notes

  • Lewis/Louis Moore McSwain's first name is spelled variously by different sources, and both ways in different entries in the Hamrick Data Pages.  Likewise his father's name is spelled variously in different sources.  On his death certificate the spelling Lewis is used.  His son George Pinkney McSwain was the informant.

In 1860, this child was listed as Lewis M.  In 1870 he is called Moore, clarifying that his name is Lewis/Louis Moore.

The 1870 census shows all the children of this family born in South Carolina, but all other sources indicate North Carolina.  I am using the years of birth from the age of this census, but following other sources to report the birthplace as Rutherford County, North Carolina.

In 1910, the head of the household is enumerated as their son Hugh.  But since Hugh lived in Cleveland County, North Carolina, across the border, in 1900, it appears that Hugh moved to his parents home after his wife Addie died.  In the 1920 census, Hugh's children enumerated in 1910 are in the household of Lewis and Sarah in the same Cherokee Township, while Hugh and his new wife Lizzie Fulton are living in Limestone Townhsip of Cherokee County.

The grandchildren are all children of Lewis and Sarah's son Hugh, whose wife Addie Sherer died before the 1910 census, probably in the birth of the last child Roy.  He has remarried before 1920, and is enumerated with his new wife Lizzie (Elizabeth Adeline Fulton), in Limestone Township of Cherokee County, South Carolina.  By 1930, Lewis is a widower and is living with his daughter Avalona Carroll, still in Cherokee Township, Cherokee County, South Carolina.
