  • There are different individuals in various genealogies confused ormixed for the last husband of Alice Miney Wilson.  We know his namewas Hancock, from Alice's later records, such as Social Securityreporting her as Alice Hancock, and her burial order form, found onone of the genealogies.

Thanks to Ann Ragsdale for providing a death certificate and Obituaryfor James Walter Hancock.  Other than these I have not seen on anygenealogy or search any definitive documentation for the last husbandof Alice Miney Wilson, named Hancock.  Several genealogies have himlisted under the name of James Walter Hancock, but attached nodocumentation of had documentation for other individuals in variousfamilies named Hancock.

An Oklahoma Death Certificate for James Walter Hancock in Holdenvilleplaces him in the correct location for the residence of Alice Mineyand related Barnetts.  A related short obituary mentions the only factin public records, other than the Holdenville location, that I havefound to definitively tie him to Alice Miney Wilson Middleton BarnettHasty Hancock.  The place of the funeral matches that on the burialorder form for Alice at her later death, with funerals for both beingannounced in Harvest Time Tabernacle in Holdenville, Oklahoma.

Hancock was also previously married two times.  His first wife isgiven by a couple of genealogies as Eliza Jane Blackwell.  She died in1904 after bearing two children, Victor Lee and Emmett Thomas.  Bothare mentioned as survivors in the obituary of James Walter Hancock in1953, named as Lee and Emet [sic], and Emmet is reported as theinformant for his father's death certificate in Holdenville, Oklahoma.

Genealogies report his second wife as Sarah Emaline White.  Sheappears in censuses as Emma (1910) and Sarah (1940).

The obituary cited above also seems to tie our James Walter Hancock tothe Hancock family in Arkansas, through the residence of one of hissons, Arthur ("Auther").  The census of 1910 in Ellis County, Texas, reports that James was born in Arkansas.  But other censuses reportTexas as his state of birth. This Arkansas family is referenced by somegenealogies, and rules out other extraneous families in other statesthat some other genealogies attach to this James Walter Hancock.  Notethat this obit does not report a place or date of birth.

Some genealogies report details of birth, death and marriage that seemto come from family sources, but do not match the documentationrecords they attach.  Alice herself is well-documented in genealogieswith photos and other documents and personal information.

The Walter Hancock in the 1880 census referenced by some genealogiesis thus likely the wrong Hancock for the husband of Alice Miney WilsonMiddleton Barnett Hasty Hancock.  At lest one genealogy has attachedan 1880 census record for a Hancock family with a son named Walter, who has a brother James.  Several genealogies have the name of Alice'swife as James Walter.  But in this census record Walter has a brothernamed James, so he is not James Walter.

I have not been able to determine exactly when Alice married WalterHancock

This makes me question Walter's parents, who are missing or vary amongthe genealogies.  His death certificate reports no name for either ofhis parents.  It does, however, report his birth place as Texas. There are several Hancocks named James, James W, Walter or othervariations in various Texas counties at about the right time or age.

The census documentation attached to some genealogies for Walter as achild of George and Julia Hancock in Tom Green County, Texas, islikely the wrong family, since this Walter had a brother named Jamesabout 3 years older than him.
