Notes

  • One source gives the birth date of 1767 for Mary Ann, but at this date her mother would be only 12 years old, if we go by the date for Lucretia Franklin's birth.  This is only one of the conflicts that we find in the dates among various sources and even in the same source in the Green family line.

A descendant of Meshack, Barbara Bell, informs me that Mary Anne is the first daughter, and was born in North Carolina.  But I do not have a date of birth.  Sheri Horton, a descendant tells us more:
"Issac Horton, bro of Jonathan, married Nancy's sister Mary Anne and they moved to Gwinnett Co GA "

    Mary Ann Green
    Birth 1762 in Bucks, Pennsylvania
    Death 1850 in Gwinnett, Georgia
    Parents:
    Meshack W Greene 1720 - 1793
    Lucretia Franklin 1725 - 1800
Marriage 1785 to Isaac Horton Surry, North Carolina

I have found a Mary Ann and Isaac Horton, among other Hortons in Gwinnett County, Georgia, in the 1850 census.  This location matches information on Isaac Horton, son of Abraham and Sarah Horton, who moved from North Carolina to Gwinnett County.  But the age is about 10 years earlier than family sources and most genealogies show.

Isaac's age in the 1850 census is 96, making him born in about 1754, while sources normally report his birth as about 1763.  Reported birth in Pennsylvania matches the son of Abraham and Martha, so this is probably the right person, despite the difference in ages, which are notoriously varying in sources of this era.

The age for Mary Ann could be the right Mary Ann.  She is 88, making her birth year about 1762.  This might work out for the family of Meshack and Lucretia Green, except the year of birth commonly reported for Lucretia is 1750, which would make her only 12 at most in 1962.  So we can allow a little for the uncertainty of ages.

It could be that Mary Ann Green who married Isaac Horton, son of Abraham, is a different Mary Ann Green from the daughter of Meshack and Lucretia.  And due to the difference in age for Isaac, this could be a different Isaac Horton than Abraham and Sarah's son.  We don't have a lot of sources with overlapping information for triangulation on these individuals.

Mary Ann's parents were supposedly Lucretia Franklin and Meshach Green who is on the 1790 Pendleton District, SC census.

Mary Ann's husband, Isaac Horton stated in his March 1833 Gwinnett Co., GA Revolutionary War pension application:

"...when he was last discharged he settled in Surry County aforesaid where he lived 2 years - from thence he moved to Spartanburg in South Carolina where he also remained 2 years - thence to Pendleton in the State last aforesaid - married and remained there 30 years or upwards - from thence he removed into Hall County in the State of Georgia & lived there 7 years - from there he removed to his present residence in the State of Georgia & County of Gwinnett aforesaid"

Mary Ann (nee Green) Horton, age 88, born in NC, was last recorded on the 1850 Sugar Hill, Gwinnett Co., GA census in the household of her husband. Her exact death date is unknown.

There is another FAG memorial for what seems to be the same Mary Ann Greene, with the alternate spelling, which we find commonly in this line, and reporting birth in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where her husband was born, rather than South Caroilna, where the Green family lived.  There is a variation of birth dates among various sources for the Hortons and Greens of this era.  The photo of the gravestones is unreadable, so the actual dates probably come from the memorial makers.
