Notes

In 1902 William was enumerated for the Chickasaw Nation citizenship rolls, with his father and sister.

U.S. Native American Enrollment Cards for the Five Civilized Tribes, 1898-1914
    25 Sep 1902, Dawes' Roll #4062, Census Card #1662

William Elvie Green, Age 12, Birth Abt 1890, 1/8 Chickasaw

Myrtle Emma Green, Age 22, Birth Abt 1880, 1/8 Chickasaw
    Tribal Affiliation Chickasaw By Blood

I found that in the 1910 census, William's father Reddie Green has died and his mother Etta Bowers (Bowen) Green has remarried.  They are enumerated in the household of William's step-father Van Brooks.

1910 Federal Census, Love County, Oklahoma, 16 May, Marietta City Ward 3, District 171, page 24B, Hse/Fam #65
Brooks, Van B Head M W 43 2nd marriage Married 1 yr Alabama Alabama Alabama Owns

Brooks, Jennie Dau F W 17 Single Texas Alabama Alabama
Green, William step-son  M Indian 19 Single OK OK Mississippi Own Income [b abt 1891]

Note that Ettie and William are reported as Indian, while Van Brooks and his daughter Jennie are reported as White.  In this 1910 census, an additional schedule reported on the Indian Nation any Indian person belonged to.  In that schedule, Ettie is listed as a Chickasaw with a Chickasaw Father and White Mother.

William is listed as a Chickasaw, with a Chickasaw Father and Mother.  Most of the people on their page are Chickasaw.  One family is Choctaw.  They are in Marietta, Love County, which was in the former Chickasaw Nation.

When William got married he and his bride Lena Doyle were living in McCurtain County, in the southeast corner of Oklahoma.  They went across the border to get married in Little River County, Arkansas.

    Arkansas, County Marriages Index, 1837-1957

Marriage 1 Jan 1916 Little River County, Arkansas

However there is another mariage record in Oklahoma.  The ceremony occurred in March 1916 in Purcell, Oklahoma.

    Oklahoma, County Marriage Records, 1890-1995
    W E Green, Age 26, born Marietta (Love County) (b abt 1890)

Marriage 22 Mar 1916 in Purcell, McClain County, Oklahoma, USA
Performed by J G Petterson, Minister of the Gospel, Methodist Episcopal Church South

Both were reported as White, though William Elvie's father Reddick was half Chickasaw and WE was on the Chickasaw roll.

Two years later, when William registered for the WWI draft, they were living south and west in Collin County, north of Dallas, Texas.

We see that in the 1920 census, after William has established his own household, he is now reported as White instead of Indian.

I found that the entry for this William Elvie Green matched all the details for William A Green, son of Reddick and Etta, except for the middle name/initial. One genealogy, of the Powell family of William's sister Myrtle Emma Green and her husband, reports his name as William Alvia.

    Reddick "Redie" J Green, b 7 Feb 1972, d 7 May 1906

Note that this genealogy has the same form of his name as I later discovered his WWI Draft Registration Card above.

It appears from other family sources that the proper formal name was Elvie. This is also the form of the name under which he was enrolled in the Dawes Indian Rolls.  All members of the Colbert line were registered as Chickasaws, though they were living in Choctaw Nation when the Dawes roll was original compiled.  Fannie Colbert later transferred the registration of herself and her children to Chickasaw Nation rolls when they moved to Chickasaw Nation. For more information on the Colbert-Green registrations as Indians in Indian Territory, see Notes for Fannie Colbert (wife of Daniel David Green b 1844).

A descendant reports the name as William Elvie.

"My mother-in-law was Margaret Green Glazener.  Margaret was the daughter of William Elvie Green and the granddaughter of Redie Jackson Green; great-granddaughter of Daniel Green; and gg-granddaughter of Toliver Green.  As I am sure you know, Daniel Green was married to Francis Colbert the daughter of an Indian agent. ... My son, Matthew Glazener is now becoming interested in the family genealogy and is trying to find information on his G-Grandfather, William Elvie Green.  Unfortunately we do not know exactly where he is buried."
--  Jan Hise Butler, email to Marion Mixon, 29 August 2009

Burial information came to light later.  See Find a Grave information below.

The 1930 census confirms that William's wife's name is Lena, after it seems to clearly be Lima in 1920.  Note that all members of the household are reported as White.

One genealogy has reported that William Elvie died in Oklahoma City on 15 October 1891.  But this is the wrong William E Green.  That man was born on 26 Feb 1884.

William Elvie's Social Security records have his birth a year later than that reported on his WWI draft registration, saying 24 Aug 1892.  There is no middle name or initial in the SS Death Index, but the Application and Claims records have his name as Will Elva Green.

This dearth information led to the discovery of a Find a Grave memorial for him, with a photo of William's gravestone.  On this his name is spelled Alvie, whereas all early family sources and Chickasaw records spelled it Elvie or had the middle initial A.  Only the years of birth and death are on the gravestone.  Note that the year of birth her is another variation, adding 1892 to the previous 1890 and 1891.  This is another common example of the lack of focus on accuracy of detail in the worldview of the previous generations.  Sharing the same gravestone is his second wife Birdie Eugene (Gilbert), born 1894, died 1983.
