Notes

  • A few genealogies report Isaac's second wife to be named Dorcas with no maiden name known, but without any documentation for the name.  This may be a misreading of the 1870 and 1880 census listing under Isaac in his household.  Dorcas was the oldest daughter in the household at that time.  Dorcas Rinehart is reported in the 1850 census as the four-year-old daughter of Isaac and Susan (Gregory) Rinehart.  No record of the second wife has been found in records.

The only Dorcas Rinehart we have found is the daughter of Isaac, in his household after the death of her mother, as the oldest child, until 1880 at the age of 33.  But the implications of this are not desirable.  Even though Isaac was a widowed head of household with no wife in the home in 1870 and 1880, in 1880 two new children appear, Magnolia, age 3 and Rhoda, age 7.  Some genealogies report these, as reported by this census, as the daughters of Isaac Rinehart and another wife named Dorcas with no surname known.  But the enumerator may have made an error, and these were daughters of Dorcas out of wedlock, and were reported here as daughters of the head of the household, Dorcas' father.

But the 1900 census reports Dorcas Rinehart, under this surname, in the household of Rhoda Rinehart Killian, and reported as Rhoda's mother (as mother-in-law of head of the household, Rhoda's husband Joel Killian).

Here Dorcas is reported as single.  Binaga (Binajah) Proffitt is reported as Single and a Lodger in this household.  These two are reported as the parents or Nala Proffitt France.  But Nala was born in 1867, and there is no report of a marriage of Dorcas, daughter of Isaac, or any other Dorcas Rinehart to Ben/Binajah Proffitt.  Perhaps they never married and later both wound up in this household of their daughter as unmarried parents.  We need more information.  Various sources report Dorcas Rinehart as the mother of Magnolia and Rhoda (reported above in 1880).
