Notes
- "Although the exact date that James Burel and his wife, Nancy Elizabeth Darby, arrived in Mississippi is unknown, the U. S. Census of 1850 shows they were already living in Attala County. According to the census, nineteen Burel (then "Burell") family members, enumerated in three separate households, were found to be living in the Newport area of Attala County."

Relationships are not reported in this census. However, from some family information in genealogies, we get a couple of clues. A couple of genealogies report that one of James Henry's wives was Lucinda Myers. But genealogies report that Lucinda was born in 1826, which would mean she should be about 24 in this census.
The identity of these two children is not clear. The first one (spelled Jame; maybe Jamie, or Jane?) was born when James Henry was about 13. So he would not be her father. The 5 year old matches pretty closely with the daughter of James Perter and Nancy's daughter Ann Elizabeth Burell, who married Samuel Joseph Jenkins.
But the baby one is hard to account for. Ann Elizabeth died in childbirth with her last child Mary Ann Jenkins in January 1949. IN the 1860 census, the girls have the last name of Jenkins instead of Burell, making the case stronger for them as grandchildren of one of James and Nancy's daughters. In 1860, baby Elizabeth is called Mary, adding another complication. Also in 1860, Jane is reported as born in Georgia, rather than Mississippi as in 1850. Nancy is now listed as Elizabeth .

The name Burrell is found spelled several ways in records and by family members. The Arkansas branch usually preferred the spelling Burrell.

James P Burrell [James Henry Burrell]
Birth 1790 Germantown, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania
Death [Jun. 9, 1863 Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi - this is the information for his son James Henry]
Inscription: CO C 40 MISS INF CSA
[It seems like the death information is for his son James Henry Burrell, because James Peter would have been 73 years old in 1863. Surely they would not send a 73 years old to the front lines in a war. The gravestone referenced has no middle name. Several genealogies report that it was James Henry who died at Vicksburg in the war. Some genealogies have no death date for James Peter, but at least one says he died in 1878; one has 1875.]
James P. Burrell was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1790 to Dr. Jean (John) Baptiste Elzeard Burel and Patience Hannah Bird. His father was a French immigrant and his mother was an Acadian. His family moved to Union, Union County, South Carolina in the 1800s. He married Nancy Elizabeth Darby about 1815, and they sailed from South Carolina to New Orleans. Then they came to Attala County, Mississippi via Natchez. They had 6 children: Mary, William Riley, John Berry, Anne Elizabeth, Isabella Avilla, and James Henry. {James P. served for the Confederate States of America, in the 40th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, Company C, "Attala Rebels". He was killed in action during the siege of Vicksburg, on June 9, 1863. [Seems like this should be James Henry, because of the age]}
Children:
William Riley Burell (1817 - 1894)

His father was Jean Baptiste Elzeard Burel, born 26 Nov 1757 in Ollioules, Var, Provence (now the Department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), France, died Mar 1828 in Goshen Hill, Union County, South Carolina. Peter's mother was Patience Hanna Bird, born unknown date in Nova Scotia, Canada, and died about 1848 in Goshen Hill.
