Notes

  • James R Grubbs was born in McLennan County (Waco area), Texas.   His family moved to Indian Territory after James was born.  He is reported as age 10 in the 1900 census in Chickasaw Nation.

1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 12 June, Township 1, District 133, page 13B,  Hse #112, am #117

The census tells us that Elisha and Laura have been married 7 years, but all the children born in Texas were born before they would have married in 1903.  So Laura is Elisha's second wife, which becomes explicit in the 1910 census.

James married Mattie Bell Dennis in 1907.

Some genealogies have erred by attaching a Grubbs family in Kansas to Nova Bernice Grubbs.  One or two report that Nova is the daughter of James Warning Grubb (no S) and Mable C Christensen.  Most have incomplete or missing  parents' names, but attach the same 1910 and 1920 census in Kansas, shown all members of the family born in Kansas.

The birth place alone is enough to disqualify this Kansas family.  They are reported in censuses in Brown County, Kansas.  The daughter of the Kansas family is reported in censuses as Bernie E Grubb born in Kansas, providing a pretext for carelessly adding these Kansas censuses and names to Nova Bernice Grubbs Jenkins, though they report her correctly as born in Oklahoma.

With the 1940 census report of her birth in Oklahoma, I persisted till I found a Grubbs family in the Grady-Caddo area.  I found Jim and Mattie Grubbs living in the town of Tuttle on the northern border of Grady County.  Jim and Mattie have a matching daughter, reported in 1920 as Nobla, 11 years old, matching her birth date in 1908.

    Tuttle is an interesting place.

"Located east of the Chisholm Trail, Tuttle was developed as a farming and ranching community. The town was platted in 1901 and the land was purchased Chickasaw land from the Colbert Family. The town is named after local rancher James H. Tuttle, a Choctaw by marriage. The right-of-way for the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway came from the tribal allotment of Frances Schrock, a Choctaw. Schrock Park is named after her."

Information about the Colbert family mentioned here is found in this genealogy.  The Colberts are of Chickasaw origin and are part of this genealogist's maternal family.

Notice that James' wife's name is Mattie B.  I found a gravestone photo in the Tuttle Cemetery on a memorial in Find a Grave that matches this.  There is a Mattie Bell Grubbs, with dates that would match the wife of James Grubbs.  Her grandson Asa Lee Jenkins tells me Mattie's maiden name was Barefoot.

I have not found James and Mattie in the 1930 census, but in 1940 they are in Anadarko, where he is reported as a Maytage appliance Dealer.

Their identity is fully confirmed when in 1940 we find J R Grubbs and his wife Mattie as expected in Anadarko, with a Maytag dealership.  Nova's husband Asa went into business with his father-in-law in this Maytag dealership, then later opened his own store.
