Notes

  • Some sources report that Harriet Jenkins Israel's father was William Mor William Mannon Jenkins.  Those that report a mother have the nameof William's wife as Anna or Annie Scroggin.  But most genealogies ofWilliam Mannon (or Manon) Jenkins have his wife as Mary (Polly)Cornet.  And they show no other wife, and no child named Harriet.

Harriet's father William Jenkins was not William Mannon Jenkins.  Ihave been able to find no further information on Anna Scroggin orother info on birth or parentage of Harriet Jenkins Israel, other thanthe censuses here.

Terry Jenkins reports that William Jenkins' parents were Abel Jenkinsand Elizabeth Tracy.

William married Annie Scroggin about 1839.  In the 1850 census, theyare reported in Anderson County, Kentucky, with children 10 years oldand under.  Annie's mother, apparently a widow, is living with them.

Some time after their son WIlliam was born, about 1854, they moved toMissouri.  They were enumerated there in 1860 living in Waverlytownship of Lafayette County.  Her mother is no longer with them andmust have died before they moved.  George Ann, reported as 2 years oldin 1850, must have died as well, since no 12-year-old child isreported matching her in 1860.

In the 1870 census it appears that William has a second wife, becauseshe is named Sarah and is the same age in 1870 as Annie was in 1860.So we might assume Annie died before the census.  But Annie's date ofdeath on her grave is 16 Jan 1880.  So did Annie have another name ofSarah?  And there is the age difference.  From the age reported in1860, Annie would been 58 in 1870, not 48.

In 1880, Mary must have also now passed away, because her two youngerchildren are now in William's household, along with his marrieddaughter Harriet and her husband William Thomas Israel.

Note the interesting birth state reports.  Harriet's record reportsthat she was born in Kentucky and so were both her parents.  Yet herfather's record reports he was born in Tennessee.  Other sourcesreport Kentucky also, Harlan County, specifically.  Next door is a W LJenkins, age 25 with his wife and child, who appears to be Harriet'sbrother.

This Civil War Service record and other records are for William MannonJenkins, not the William Jenkins who was married to Annie Scroggin andwas the father of Harriet Jenkins Israel.  Several genealogies haveconfused and tried to merge these with quite a resultant mess.
