Note that Coley and Mattie's first three sons were born in Arkansas, then the last two in Louisiana, and now they are back in Arkansas since the birth of Arch just 4 months before.  Hempstead County, Arkansas, borders Bossier Parish, Louisiana, on the north.  Hope is the Hempstead county seat.

Columbus' and James' mother is reported born in Indiana, indicating that Mattie is Coley's second wife.  John, Benjamin and Arch are Mattie's sons.  This corresponds to the difference in Coley and Mattie's ages.  This is further corroborated by the corrected error in Coley's record for the number of years married.

The enumerator first entered 19 years married (married in abt 1881), matching the first marriage, then corrected it to 13 years (married in abt 1887), matching Mattie's record.  Columbus' birth date is reported as Dec 1881, which would match a first marriage for Coley in early 1881 or late 1880.

Since John was also reported born in Arkansas, but in Sept 1889, this fits with a marriage in 1887.  Birth states of the children also indicates they they lived on the Arkansas side of the border.  Note also that it is reported that in that 10-year period Mattie has had 6 children, but only 3 are living.  This is consistent with the gap between the marriage and the birth of the first reported child, John, in Sept 1889.  The first child was born before John, but died before this 1900 census.

Various genealogies report they moved to McCurtain County, Oklahoma.  This is confirmed by their daughter's Social Security records, which repoert Nellie Alford born in Idabel, McCurtain County, Oklahoma in 1910.

They were there before the census was taken in 1910.  The census shows the child before Nellie, Sallie, was 3 years old at census time in 1910.  So she was born in early 1907 or in 1906.  We can estimate they moved across the Oklahoma border about 1905.

Two more children were born after the 1910 census.  The last, Dewey, was born in 1913.  He is reported as age 17 in the 1930 census.  His death certificate, providing his exact birth date, was discovered in Fannin County, Texas, southwest across the Red River from McCurtian County, where he had grown up..  Dewey's residence at the time of death was Hugo, Choctaw County, Oklahoma.  Bonham is southwest of Hugo.

This family has not been found in the 1920 census.  Nellie, age 19, and Dewey, age 17, appear to beir the last children.  Going by Dewey's age, we know Mattie lived until about 1913.

In 1940, Coley was in his son Archie's household.
