Several genealogies report a census record from 1870 in Vermillion County, Indiana for a John and Elizabeth Brewer, age 77 and 70 respectively. They were also both born in Virginia.This matches our John and Elizabeth Dolton Brewer. But these genealogies also report that Elizabeth died about 1860, and indeed John is alone in that 1860 census, living with his daughter Eliza McDaniel and her famliy in Coffee County, Tennessee. It is a long way to Vermillion County, Indiana for a couple of age 70 to be moving before the 1870 census. Addiitonally in that household is a younger person named Jane Brewer, age 30 and so born about 1840. No child matching this Jane was reported among the children of John and Elizabeth in Rockingham, Virginia, in the 1850 census.
