    Mary was the second child of nine born to William Smith Schooley andEstella Anne Whiteman. She married John Dilling Harkins, Jr. about1919 in Wyoming (possibly Oklahoma). They had two children, Stella andJohn.

    Her husband was killed in 1927 and she lived with his parents, throughthe death of her mother in law in an automobile accident. She marriedErnest E Young on 26 Apr 1944. After his death she went to live withher daughter, Stella, in California until her death.

    Mary was well known in Nowata, Oklahoma where she ran the kitchen forthe local school. She could cook anything, from scratch. She began hercooking career on a wood stove. She and Ernie raised their own beefand pork, they had a large orchard and planted a huge garden everyyear. They cured their own hams and bacon and they canned a great dealof what they grew.
