Notes
- In various family and public records the name Padgett is spelled variously as Padgitt, Padgette and Padgett, and sometimes with only one T, and sometimes without the D.
In the 1870 census, Barbara and her husband are living next door to Reuben and Judith McSwain. This Berry McSwain corresponds to Berryman McSwain, son of David M McSwain and Susannah Hamrick.

Their proximity to William A Padgett and the ages of the two indicates that Barbara is likely an aunt of William, a sister of Wylie Padgett. Wylie named one of his daughters Barbara Ellen.
I found the Berry McSwain family in the Hamrick Data Pages that survey these families so well. This source confirms that Berry's wife Barbara is a Padgett. The Hamrick compilation has missed some children reported in the 1870 census for Berry and Barbara, but records some older children already out of the home in 1870.
The child understood by the Hamrick data as "Coach" is likely more correctly reported in the census as Coatsworth. "Finnettle" similarly is Finetta in the census. These variations in names through the family history give us some interesting phonetic insights into the pronunciation of the region. Note that the birth date from the age in the 1870 census would be two years earlier than that reported in the Hamrick data.
