Notes

  • Henry's father was Edmund, brother of King Edward I of England (died 1307).  Edmund and Edward were sons of King Henry III.  Through this lineage, a later descendant of King Edward's father Henry III also became king.

The son of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, Henry Bolingbroke, Duke of Lancaster, claimed the throne upon the death of his cousin King Richard II, usurping it from the designated heir, another cousin Roger Mortimer.  Bolingbroke became King Henry IV.  The story of the family's dynastic wars is told in many stories, including a series of plays by William Shakespeare, two of which are Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2.

Henry's brother Thomas, 2nd Earl of Lancaster, was executed by King Edward III for treason.  His brother Henry was in no way implicated nor suspected in Thomas' plot.  He kept one of the family titles, Earl of Leicester (1324).  Henry later, however, joined in another rebellion against King Edward.  In 1326, he joined Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer when they returned from France to depose Edward.  His brother's title of Earl of Lancaster was later bestowed on Henry by Parliament in 1327.
