Notes
- Several genealogies spell Joseph's middle name as Seton, a common spelling of this name. But in the Delayed Birth Certificates of two of his children, Dorcas Ethel and Lawrence Milton, his name is spelled Seaton.
In the 1880 census Joseph is with his brother Murphy C and his family in one household in German Township, Madison County, Missouri. We learn from further sources that they were there only a short time, maybe a year and a half.

Genealogies with burial details report Murphy and Mary dying in Jefferson County, Tennessee, their original home area, and Joseph in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee. A descendant of Murphy confirmed details for Murphy, and provides information confirming he moved back to Tennessee. See notes for Murphy Columbus Strange. I later found the censuses for Murphy's family to fill in the details.
