Notes

  • One early source records the name of what appears to be this same child as "Mary Louizer" (Family note paper, in the possession of family members).  This source also states the date as 21 Jan 1857, whereas in another report, Harold Christian gives the date of birth as 20 Jan 1857.  Her death record has her name as Mary Lou Chapel.  Her son John's death certificate reports his mother's name as Mary Jane Jenkins.

"It is just possible that Joseph's family lived in the Atlanta, Georgia, area when William, Lide and Amanda were born. Or perhaps they had relatives living in that area during the period they were receiving the paper.  Later known as 'Bud,' William accompanied the family from Georgia to Cass County, Texas, ca 1860 [they were in the 1860 census in Cass County]"

She was listed in the 1860 census only as M L.

Harold K Christian (Jenkins Family History, private paper) reports her proper name as Mary Lydia, with nickname Lide.  I think, however, that the actual given name was Lydie.  -- OBJ

In censuses, Mary is reported as being born in Mississippi, matching the report of marriage of her parents Joseph Sanford Jenkins and Lucinda Amanda Taylor.  However, the 1860 census above reports Mary was born in Georgia, along with two other siblings, matching family information.  This is also consistent with the birth of her older brother's and younger sister's birth in Georgia, reported in family history.  The 1880 census likewise reports Mery Lydie was born in Georgia.  The family does not appear in the 1870 census.

The birth states here differ from those on earlier census reports for her parents.  The census reports for Mary indicate that her father was born in Alabama instead of South Carolina.  The censuses for 1900 and 1910 match earlier reports for Lucinda that she was born in Mississippi, but 1920 says it was Alabama.

    Mary got married in 1882.
