Note that the birth place stated on this certificate is Jefferson County, Tennessee.  Research by family researcher Loretta Gregory Gay indicates that the birth place was actually in nearby Newport, Cocke County, Tennessee.

George Thomas Gregory went by Tom.  He is listed variously in the censuses as George Thomas, Thomas G, and G T.

In 1900 Tom (George) is 16 and at home with the family of Dock, reported in Township 4 of Chickasaw Nation.  Doc and Julia and the children are listed in the 1900 Federal Census in Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 4 July, Township 4 South Range 4E, District 145, page 27A, Hse/Fam #402

We have a marriage date for Tom and Fannie Belle Wilson on 6 November 1906.  In 1910 census, he is married and living in Lincoln township, Comanche County, Oklahoma.  Lawton is the County Seat of current Comanche County.  This is west of Marlow, Stephens County, Oklahoma, where his father, Dock, was living in 1910.  His brother Ed is living in his household.

In 1918, George registered for the WWI draft in Stephens County, Oklahoma.  He was living in Marlow, and registered in Duncan.

In the 1920 Garvin County, Oklahoma, census, Tom appears to have been counted twice in the same county, but in different townships.  I think I know why this occurred.  Here is what I find in the census reports.

We find Tom listed in the household of his father Dock, in Elmore Township of Garvin County.  In this household listing, Dock and Julia have 5 sons living with them and all reported as single.  The names of George Thomas (Tom) are turned around, and he is reported as Thomas G.  This also happened to his brother William Henry Harrison Gregory, who is reported here as Harris W, and in 1930 he was Harrison W.

1920 Federal Census, Garvin County, Oklahoma, 25 January, Elmore Township, District 25, page 11B,  Hse #188, Fam #200, in the household of his father, Gregory Dock G  Head  M W AL VA TN Farmer:
Gregory Thomas G Son M W 36 Single TN AL TN Farmer, Working Out

This report is confusing, though, because he is reported as single, as are all his brothers in the household.  We know he was already married with two children in the 1910 census.  Tom and Fannie's children were born in 1908, 1909 and 1911.

I also find a 1920 listing for GT Gregory, in his own household, with all the right names and ages of wife Fannie, children Hoyt, Otto and Anna.  They are reported as living in Lindsay Township in an unincorporated area.  But G T is reported as a Farmer.  I do not know how far outside the town of Lindsay the township of Lindsay would go.  I know Elmore Township, where Tom's father was living, also as a farmer, is south and east of Lindsay.

Family members refer to Dock as living in Elmore City.  Elmore City appears to have been incorporated or the name of the same township changed between 1920 and 1930.  The location for Dock's family in 1930 is Elmore City, Garvin, Oklahoma.

It is quite plausible that Tom (GT) was living in Lindsay town, or at the southern edge of Lindsay Township, towards Elmore Township, so was enumerated with his household there.  A different enumerator was reporting Elmore Township.  I would think that GT and his brothers were working one farm with Dock.  Ed, who had been living with Tom in Lincoln in 1910, is now listed again in his father's household in Elmore.

Tom did not live far from them, even though their houses are within two different township boundaries.  It seems likely to me that Dock reported all his children who were farming with him as part of his household, while GT with his full household was separately reported in Lindsay.  In Dock's family, no wife or children of Tom are reported.  In fact Tom (Thomas G) is reported as single.

This is understandable if the enumerator heard Dock say that he and his sons were farming together, and Thomas G was one of the sons.  The enumerator could have understood that to mean that Thomas G was another son still living at home, and thus reported him as single.  In Lindsay, earlier in the month, the other enumerator there had properly recorded Tom and Fannie's household in town.

It is interesting that in this 1920 census G T's father's place of birth is correctly reported as Alabama, but in 1930 this changes to Tennessee.  This could be an enumerator error, who also recorded Thomas' wife Fannie as born in Tennessee, as well as both her parents.

In 1930, we find him as expected in his own household with Fannie, in Lindsay Township.  But only two of the children are shown in this census report:  Otto, age 20 and Anna age 19.  Hoyt was out of the house on his own in 1930.
