Notes

  • Jorial Barnett's wife who was the mother of Clarinda (b 1851) and Susan J (b 1852-3) was Jorial's second wife.  In the 1850 census in Monroe County, Tennessee, Josiah is married to a young wife of age 25 named Nancy.  This is Nancy Powell, whom we find on the roll of the same church as Jorial/Jorile and his first wife, also named Nancy.

We see a report in the minutes of the Hanging Dog Baptist Church that on 12 June 1847 Nancy Powell was "dismissed by letter," which appears to mean that she had joined another church who had written back to the HDBC to notify them, a common practice between Baptist churches when members change congregations.

I thought this might be when they moved to another church, since in the 1850 census we find that Jorile, or Jorile as some public and family records spell it, and his econd wife Nancy are just across the border in Monroe County, Tennessee.  There is no record in the HDBC minutes along this same time period, however, of Jorile moving his membership from that church.  They could still have come back to that church for services even if they were living across the state line.  We found out, however, that Jorial and Nancy Powell did not marry until October 1848.

I had earlier found another source.  Barbara Stevens, in a genealogy discussion list on Ancestry.com, reported several pertinent and credible dates and other information on this family.  Barbara says that Jorile married Nancy Powell in about 1848.  I shared this information with Nadene Snyder, and while I was examining the Hanging Dog Church records, she found the record of Nancy Powell's marriage to Jorial Barnett:  The name of the groom is written as Josiah, not Jorial.  This may be one source for the name appearing as Josiah in some other soruces and genealogies.

In the 1850 census in Monroe County, Tennessee, all Jorile's children are at home.  The youngest child, Zachary Taylor Barnett, born in about January 1850, is Nancy Powell's son.

Since Joriel and Nancy Powell married in 1848, Zachary Taylor Barnett is Nancy's son.  The other children listed in the 1850 census are the children of Jorile's first wife Nancy.

In 1860 Jorile is living in Washington County, Illinois, married to a his 3rd wife, a widow named Sarah Morgan Gibson (See notes for Jorile Barnett).

Jorile's second wife also died after the birth of two children (Clarinda and Susan) in Tennessee, after which Jorile (Jorial) moved to Illinois, where we find that he married widow Sarah Morgan Gibson in 1857.  They are recorded there in the 1860 census.  The ages and birth states of the Barnett children help spell out this story.  Note that while the 1860 census reports Zachary is already 12 years old, the 1850 census says Zachary was 9 months old in November 1850.  The latter is most likely correct, indicating that his parents reported the actual birth month

    Susan J Barnett 8 F Tennessee

Sarah and Jorial were not married until 1857, so Sarah is not the mother of Clarinda and Susan Barnett, having had her last child John Gibson in Illinois in 1852, the same approximate time as the birth of Susan Barnett in Tennessee.  The mother of Clarinda and Susan, as well as Zachary, is Nancy Powell, Jorile's second wife.  This means Nancy died sometime in late 1852 or later, after the birth of Susan.

Jorile probably moved to Illinois after Nancy died, but I have not yet (June 2012) found her death or burial information in North Carolina or Tennessee.
