Married Francis Marion BARNETT

Notes

  • Nancy Jane was the daughter of Charles S Gibson and Sarah Morgan Gibson.  After her father's death, her mother married Jorile Barnett, who had moved in to Washington County, Illinois, from Tennessee after the death of his second wife Nancy Powell.  Nancy Jane later married Jorile's son Francis M (Frank).

    Barbara comments on their relationship on an Ancestry.com Discussion Group, 20 Mar 2005 :
    "Nancy Jane was a daughter of Sarah and Charles S. Gibson."

    Frank (F M) and Nancy (N J) are recorded in the 1880 census for HIll County Texas, living next door to Jorile (J R) and Sarah.

    Nancy Jane's gravestone reports her date of death as 5 April 1891.  I find, however, that an affidavit sworn in 1926 related to this family reports her death as 2 April 1891.  Perhaps the earlier date is the date of death, and the later one the date of burial, which was reported on the gravestone.  I have seen this happen in other cases.  The affidavit, sworn in regard to inheritance of a certain plot of land, reports many details on Francis Marion and Nancy Jane and their children.  Thanks to Barbara Stevens for sharing this document with me.

    This document also reports that Frances Jane lost 5 children in infancy.  In the affidavit she is referred to as Jane Barnett:
    "F. M. Barnett and Jane Barnett had born to them twelve children, five of same having died in infancy and seven having reached maturity."
    --  Affidavit on F M Barnett, Stonewall Co TX, 23 July 1926

    Before me the undersigned authority on this day personally appeared G. T. Sparks, Ollie Sparks, and M. P. Barnett, all known to me to be credible persons, and who after been duly sworn, each did depose and say for himself and herself the following:

    We are each well and personally acquainted with the family history of F. M. Barnett and Jane Barnett were never married to any other person except to each other; And that the said F. M. Barnett and Jane Barnett had born to them twelve children, five of same having died in infancy and seven having reached maturity as follows;

    1.  Sarah Barnett married 2 [sic], and lived with the said Geo Tomlinson until her death in 1913, and the said Sarah Tomlinson and Geo Tomlinson, had two children to reach maturity and only two but had some to die in infancy,  That Geo Tomlinson died in 1917, never having been married after the death of Sarah Tomlinson, and their two children were Ollie Tomlinson and L. J. Tomlinson, and L. J. That this affidavit is made for the purpose of showing the heirs capable of conveying Northeast one quarter of Section No. 269, in Block D, H & T C Hy Co land in Stonewall County, Texas

    We are fully cognizant of all of the above facts, and they are all true and correct.
