Name2: Mollie Green.3

Notes

  • Mollie's actual name was Mary, as we would expect from the nickname Mollie.  She is thus listed in her first census in 1880 with her parents in Rockwall County, Texas, northeast of Dallas.

    1880 Federal Census, Rockwall County, Texas, 10 June, District 32, page 3, Hse/Fam #21
Stroud, John A  W M 29 Husband Farmer AL GA GA
Stroud, Mary R  W F 30 Wife Keeping House AL SC SC
Stroud, Mary  W F 9 Dau Attended School AL AL AL [b abt 1872]

Mollie Stroud married a man named Williams, then after his death, she married Columbus L Lane, who had been widowed at the death of his first wife Mary Miller.  Her 3rd husband was Toliver Jorile Green, another widower.

Columbus Lane had grown up in Panola County, Texas, on the Louisiana border.  But while Mary was a child in her parents' home in Rockwall County, Texas, in the 880 census, it appears to be Columbus that we find in Parker County, Texas, west of Fort Worth, married to Mary Miller.

    1880 Federal Census, Parker County, Texas, 4 June, Precinct 2, District 136, page 8, Hse/Fam #356 Lane, Lafayette W M 20 Head Farmer TX LA LA [b abt 1860]
Lane, Mary W F 19 Wife Keeping House IL TN IL [b abt 1861] Lane, Tom W M 1mo born May TX TX Ill

This is the farthest west that we have documentation for Columbus Lafayette Lane.  And his parents are both reported born in Louisiana, while othe reports say his father was in GA and his mother in AL.

Despite the seeming discrepancy of parents' birth state, this census record seems to match the general profile, and some genealogies reprot this as documentation for Columbus L Lane in 1880.  Some of the genealogies, however, also lack the information about Mary (Mollie) Stroud Wiliams, and attribute the later chidlren of Mollie with Columbus to Mary Miller. For now this 1880 census appears to be a legitimate record of Columbus Lafayette Lane, who was widowed at the death of Mary Miller, and married Mollie Stroud in about 1889 or early 1990.

By 1900, Mollie Stroud had been married to Mr Williams and widowed after bearing three children.  She is in the home of her widowed mother Mary (enumerated here as Martha).

In the 1900 census, we have an unusual documentation of Mollie's progress in marriages after being widowed.  She and her children are fully reported in two different records for neighboring counties.  Besides Mollie's enumeration with her three sons in her mother's home in Kaufman County, Texas, she also appears a second time in Hunt County, north of Kaufman, with her new husband Columbus L Lane, with the same three children.

An odd thing about this is that the date of enumeration in Hunt County was three days earlier than the enumeration in Kaufman County.  So why was she reported under her first married name, as a widow, when three days earlier she had been recorded by another enumerator as the wife of her new husband?  Thus her last name and her marital status were both changed already.

Yet there can be no doubt this is the same Mollie with these same three sons with the name Williams and the same given names and ages.  There is one anomaly related to Mollie's birth date, which is characteristic of the 1900 census.

There is one year's difference between the birth year in the two enumerations of Mollie.  Here is Hunt County it is reported as July 1871, while in the Kaufman County enumeration it was July 1870.  Also it is unclear what is intended in the report of number of years married.  It looks like the enumerator reported the total numbers of years since Columbus' first marriage and has drawn down the same number for Mollie, even though they have just gotten married.

The number for Columbus looks like 20, but the number has no curve, looking more like a Z than 2.  The number for Mollie is also awkward, but looks like a 2.  The report of them as married for 20 years  cannot be right, since her last Williams child is only 2 years old.  Maybe the enumerator wanted to report the total time they had been married to anyone, but the report for this field is normally the number of years this husband and wife have been married.

The 1910 census reports that Columbus and Molly have been married 7 years.  How can that be when they are enumerated as a family in 1900, with the Williams boys reported as his step-sons and Mollie as his wife?  They are in Rockwall County, a little west of Hunt County.  The two separate census reports and the ages of the children indicate Columbus and Mollie had just gotten married before the 1900 census, perhaps as long as a year, so it should have been 0 years or 1.

In 1910, the enumerator reports the place of birth of all the children as Alabama, which is Mollie's birth state, not that of the Lane children's mother, which was reported as Illinois in 1900.  Wiley Lane in 1910 appears to be Wiley Williams.  There is an age discrepancy, with Wiley Lane being 8 years old here, while Wiley Williams was already 2 in 1900.  But there was no Lane child named Wiley in the 1900 household.

Mollie Stroud Williams Lane was the 2nd wife of Toliver Jorile Green, and apparently died without bearing children from this marriage.  Mollie and T J married sometime in the broad range between May 1910 and January 1920.  This is arrived at by the census reports for 1910 and 1902.  In the 1910 census, Joe (Toliver Jorile) is a widower.

This means he married Mollie Stroud Williams Lane sometime after 25 April 1910.  In the 1920 census, T J (Joe T) is married to his second wife Mollie.  So far I have no closer date than this.  Family sources had no dates for this marriage.  It is likely the marriage ceremony was in Marlow, county seat of Stephens County, based on other family information.

Mollie is reported in the 1920 census in Richland Township, Stephens County, Oklahoma (near Marlow), as the wife of Toliver Jorile, and also in the household are two children from the first marriage, Minnie and Homer.

1920 Federal Census, Stephens County, Oklahoma, 2 Feb, Richland Township, District 262, page 10A (No house of family numbers given), Joe (Toliver Jorile) is married to Mollie in 1920:
Green, Joe T  Head M W 46 OK GA AL Farmer
Green, Mollie  Wife  F W 48  AL AL AL
Green, Minnie Dau  F W 20  OK AL AL
Green, Homer Son M W 12  OK AL AL

I note that the age of Homer is 12.  For this census date of 1 February 1920, this would mean he was born later than February 1907.  But the known birth date in the family information is 12 December 1906.  He should be age 13 on 1 February 1920.

I have found no further information on Mollie in public records.  Mollie died some time before June 1926, when Joe (Toliver Jorile) Green married his third wife, the widow Margaret (Maggie) Drucilla Welch née Crenshaw.
