In the 1910 census we find Jane Padgett boarding with Maggie and her family.  In 1900 she had been boarding in the household of Maggie's father Phillip, along with her mother Lavinia Padgett.  In 1880, the Padgetts had been next-door neighbours of Phillip.  In 1910 Maggie and her family are next door to her parents, Phillip and Martha.

The 1920 census returns to the standard spelling of Rowland.

In 1920, her name is spelled Maggy, rather than Maggie, as we have it in previous censuses.  Maggy is a widow, head of her household as a farmer.  We can estimate the year of death of her husband Bedford by the ages of their two youngest children.  Walton is 8 and Edward is 5.  Edward would have been born in roughly 1915, so Bedford could have died during that pregnancy or at some time between 1905 and February 1920, when the census was held.

A Bedford Rowland was born in 1918, according to a marriage record in Arkansas County.  This appears to be a son of Maggie and her first husband Bedford Forrest Rowland, who died before the 1920 census.  But this child does not appear in Maggie's household in 1920 or 1930.  But I don't know who his parents would be otherwise.  The young Bedford married Bernice McSwian in 1938 in Arkansas County.  The residence for both is reported as Ethel.

By 1930, Maggie has remarried, to William Porter.  They have two children, ages 17 and 16.  This would meant that these are William's children by a previous wife.  Also living in the household is Maggie's son Edward Rowland.

Census ages indicate that Maggie was born in 1875-77.  The Social Security Death Index reports that at the time of her death her age was 65, with an estimated birth year of 1878.  The Index does not report an exact date of birth.  The 1900 census reports the month and year of birth.  For Maggie this was Aug 1876.  This is consistent with the ages reported in the censuses, and is the most exact date, so I have reported August 1866 as her birth date.

I had never found out what Maggie's middle initial E stood for until July 2013, when her granddaughter contacted me through Facebook.

    Shirley Mitchell wrote:
"Philip K McSwain and Martha Elizabeth Padgett were the parents of my grandmother, Maggie Ella McSwain, who married Bedford Forrest Rowland."

"I also remember Grandma Maggie who lived a few miles down the dusty road from Jim and Lizzie [Jones]. Almost all of those females were overweight and dipped snuff. (Not Lizzie.) We were expected to let them kiss you and I was always reticent about that, but I did it. Maggie's husband was Mr. Will Porter. ... They had a lime tree in their front yard. I was probably 3 years old."

"I am the son of Oliver and Bertie McSwain.  My grandfather and Ken's grandfather were brothers and my grandmother and Ken's grandmother were sisters, making my Dad and Ken's dad, Wirt McSwain, double first cousins, which is genetically equivalent to being half-brothers.
"When I was growing up, I used to go fishing with Wirt McSwain when he came to Ethel to sport fish on the White River Wildlife Refuge near Ethel.
"I grew up in Ethel, Arkansas.  I am not sure that I knew your grandmother Maggie McSwain Rowland, but I do remember a Maggie Porter who lived near Ethel and that a man named Walton Rowland used to visit my dad from time to time.  Maybe he is kin to you, possibly your dad?"

When I sent you info on these people, I did not have the date of death.  Just came from the cemetery and am sending these dates of death:

Maggie McSwain Rowland Porter....1952 (no month or day on tombstone) [She later determined this is wrong.  From records, the actual date is 17 Nov 1951; see Shiurley's note below]
    Myrtle Rowland Allsup....2/25/1972

    Sarah Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rowland Jones...9/22/1975
    Edward Rowland....8/15/1970

They are all buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Ethel, Arkansas.

"Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Ethel is where Maggie McSwain Rowland Porter is buried.  I attended this funeral and know that it is her gravestone.  Also her children, Myrtle Allsop, Sarah Elizabeth Jones, and Edward Rowland are buried close to her.  Her husband when she died was William Porter and he is buried next to her.  (Also on the other side of William Porter's grave is another wife he had!)"
--  Shirley Rowland Mitchell, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, April 07, 2015

Shirley reported on Maggie's birth and death dates.  Her gravestone has the death date as only the year 1952, but the correct full date from records is 17 November 1951.

"I do not know why Maggie McSwain Rowland Porter's headstone says she died in 1952.  I guess that is when the put up the headstone, and nobody told the the person putting the info on it the correct date.  She was born August 30, 1876, and died November 17, 1951."

    Maggie Ella McSwain Porter
Birth Aug 30, 1876 Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas
Death Nov 17, 1951 Arkansas County, Arkansas

Maggie was the daughter of Phillip K McSwain and Martha Elizabeth Padgett, who had moved with their families, soon after their marriage, from North Carolina to Ethel, on the White River, in Arkansas County. Maggie married Bedford Forrest Rowland, who had come from Kentucky. They had several children.

Bedford died in about 1917. In 1928, Maggie married widower William James Porter, who is buried near her in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery in Ethel.

Maggie's grave has only the year of birth and death, but each is one year later than actual.  Maggie's granddaughter reported her birth and death dates:
"Maggie McSwain Rowland Porter ... She was born August 30, 1876, and died November 17, 1951." -- Shirley Rowland Mitchell, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, April 07, 2015
